Passenger fined $58,500 for on board behaviour.

?I will cause a stir and bring this plane down?: Virgin passenger $58,500 out of pocket for disrupting flight

At the risk of being non PC...about time!:ok:

Excellent. I wish the obnoxious loud mouthed idiot who insulted the cabin crew on a Lufthansa flight I was on few months ago had been dealt with similarly.

When told to get into his seat and switch his cellphone off as we were about to taxi out, he said to the steward : "Did you learn your manners in a Gestapo camp?"

There was an almost shocked silence as we waited for the aircraft to come to a halt and the passenger escorted off in handcuffs, but the young and rather camp attendant defused it by saying : "I'm not that old ......." and it was left at that. Never say the Germans don't have a sense of humour, even when insulted.

This moron will be lucky to have $ 5.80 to his name. How do you recover this amount, garnishee his dole !!!

ruddman 22nd Jan 2015 11:22

Firstly you paint his head on the aircraft as a reminder of his dumb actions. Then he spends every weekend cleaning the the aircraft - because it's the weekend and nobody works weekends - inside and out. Waxed and chamied. Vacuumed. Dusted. Cobwebbed. Grease and oil. Tyre black. The whole works.

And does it until he pays off his debt that he owes.

Clear Message

Hope this sends a clear message to potential idiots that choose to fly that this behaviour is not tolerated. With any luck it should fire a warning salvo at those that think this rubbish is ok.

It's not OK and if it weren't so cost prohibitive there should be random drug and alcohol testing for the general public who fly. Where is he going to find that kind of money? He won't.

It's a strong ruling and good that it's in mainstream media for all to see.

Very refreshing Chief Magistrate Steven Heath :D

He will just bankrupt himself. The reparations will never be paid.

ranmar850 22nd Jan 2015 21:20

The linked article stated he worked in the families removal business and travelled regularly between Sydney and Perth--although obviously not in business class :)So there will be assets and bankruptcy will not be an easy option. And, think about it, being forced to declare bankruptcy has penalties of it's own--it certainly wouldn't be an easy out.Either way, he will pay a price, but Virgin may not see the reparations. More publicity on consequences of these sort of actions, the better.:ok:

PAXboy 23rd Jan 2015 19:09

Whilst I support the action and home that this will be the start of a new wave, I see this in the article:

Brenden James Tume, 23, had consumed alcohol and cannabis before boarding the aircraft, which left Perth Airport at 5pm on July 9 but returned two hours later after he became abusive towards crew members.
Was he visibly intoxicated when he boarded? If so then the Agents and possibly CC are also at fault.

Metro man 23rd Jan 2015 22:24

Having driven taxis in a previous life, I can tell you there are more different varieties of drunkeness than you can count. Happy, sad, morose, aggressive, quiet, the list goes on. The typical drunk, staggering and slurring their speech isn't the only way they behave.

The gate agent has only a few seconds with each passenger and is just trying to match passport, face and boarding pass so they can get onboard often under time pressure. Try getting into a nightclub at 2.00am on a Saturday morning and see how carefully the bouncers check to see if you're intoxicated. At that time of the morning drunks are not uncommon and the bouncers will have to deal with the problem themselves if they allow it inside.

Well done to the authorities for a fine of this magnitude, we need to see penalties such as this more often.

onetrack 24th Jan 2015 03:37

It won't alter this yobs behaviour one iota. The reparations and the fine will never be paid, as H&F says, he will just bankrupt himself.

He'll ensure that he won't lose any money that could interfere with his alcohol and cannabis purchases.

More importantly, I trust he finds he can't board any commercial flight anywhere again.

Pinky the pilot 24th Jan 2015 06:05

I remember that back in the early 70s even for offences under the motor traffic act, the sentence issued by the Magistrate was generally determined as a fine of $xx,in default YY days imprisonment!

Now if that sort of penalty was imposed for the subject of this thread things may indeed turn out quite differently.:ooh:

Bankruptcy doesn't cancel court fines or child support. It's only debt owing to other people or businesses.

onetrack 24th Jan 2015 08:58

There's a sizable difference between an outstanding debt and being able to actually collect that debt.
The simple facts are, that unpaid fines run into the hundreds of millions in each State - and despite the full force of the Law, enforcement regimes, and legislation galore - unpaid fines continue to increase and yobs continue to thumb their nose at them.
The jails are full, and virtually no-one goes to jail for unpaid fines any more.
