Rex to fly CNS/TSV

Rex opens Cairns-Townsville route as part of Queensland expansion | Australian Aviation

Surely if Rex can do this in Skytrans back yard, Skytrans should have done it 1st ?

Going Nowhere 3rd Nov 2014 05:20

It's only once a week each way, no doubt to rotate aircraft and crew to/from TSV.

from the article

"“We will commence with a modest service on 3 January 2015 but once we have bedded in the new regulated routes we will look to ramp up services as well as look at other opportunities to service Far North Queensland,” Lodge said."

Skytrans did many moons ago. Originally started in the Titan in the pre Dash 8 (and pre Wild) days and was quite popular. Later on it was turned into a Dash service and due to poor scheduling it's on time performance was appalling and became unpopular with very low pax numbers. Eventually this improved and it started to become popular again but just as this happened they decided to "redistribute" the aircraft to a mining contract, cancelled the service and never went back.

Also been done recently by Virgin in both the Embraer and ATR.

interesting that when Macair bought out by real estate guy (BIRT ?), the 1st thing he apparently did was take on the big red rat on certain routes like CNS/TSV & it was all downhill from there.

Not saying this was sole cause of Macair demise, but probably didn't help their cause.

They used same aircraft as Rex.

Rex seem completely unphased by Qlink and VARA.

Incorrect I think you might be confusing running the SLABs against Link Q400s on the TSV/ISA Route.

MACAIR should have been selling seats TSV/CNS to offset the costs of re positioning airframes instead of running empty ferry flights. :ugh:

The slabs were running alone on the TSV/ISA(CNY) route as a codeshare, then SSA started running the dash against their partner.

Spinnerhead 7th Nov 2014 00:06

Actually SSA commenced TSV/CCY (a protected route) after the demise of Macair, ditto TSV/ISA.

Rex operated TSV/MKY for a couple of months, but pulled out due low loads factor.

It is a bit difficult for a SAAB to compete with a DASH directly.

BNEA320 8th Nov 2014 00:02

what does this mean ?

Thought a Saab 340B was cheaper to operate than a Dash 8-100 or -200 & same amount of seats (34-36)

BackdoorBandit 8th Nov 2014 03:57

Probably referring to Rex's only competition on the TSV/CNS route, 50 and 74 seat QLink Dash 300 and 400's.
