Everyone flying to SYD used to pay SYD noise tax for many years.

One has to question Sydney Airport's backup power system. Second time they've had a total power failure.

Imagine if the Airlines here did an '89' stunt, would never happen obviously as they hate each other but boy would that force our pathetic Govt to act for the WHOLE of Australia not just a 'noisy' group which essentially hold this country back with a stunted growth potential.:ugh:

Don't fret my friends, the airlines will ensure that SACL pays dearly for today's shenanigans. The amount of money lost by the airlines alone, and the amount that SACL will have to reimburse them will far outweigh the additional carpark and coffee remuneration scooped up at the airport.

I agree with several posters on here, the airport is a complete joke, and by world standards it ranks low, to be honest it is complete ****. It's an embarrassment as it provides incoming international folk their first insight into Australia's sub standard, retarded third world infrastructure. It really provides all the evidence you need to show that successive Australian governments are nothing short of complete f:mad:wits.

You must understand, that the Australian government is not the least bit interested in the Australian people!:=

Did you catch the guy on TV when he said the 'advertising' was still working just fine and nearly everyone had a coffee. Betcha a beer, it took the 'leccy about 5 minutes to fix 'er up; and two bloody hours struggling through the nightmare Sydney traffic around the airport to get there and clear security. 0900 is gridlock hour.

But, we can for the while at least, still drink the water (until beer is cheaper).

I haven't been to SYD for several years, but recently went to MEB in April this year. After departing from AKL International, I thought for a moment that we had landed at a third world airport. Geez, what a shambles trying to get your baggage and then get out to the street through that maze of badly signed areas and narrow exits etc. that they call the arrival area. Coupled with all the unhelpful staff in the area who don't seem to know much about what they should know, I can't see myself returning anytime soon.

Sorry to rain on your parade Big E, but 'MEB' is IATA speak for Essendon.... I can understand your issue if you actually landed there...
Don't worry, a number of carriers over the years have lined up on final for the wrong runway at the wrong airport. It's not that far over to 'MEL'.
Linfox have kindly provided car sales and supermarkets etc for those who do arrive at 'MEB'.

Big E, you are correct mate. Melbourne isn't much better. But Sydney is the worst by a long shot. Australia has a tendency to talk talk talk and not deliver. It's a bit like Brisbane's issue with the ports. International cruise liners coming half way around the world just to dock up stream from the city's **** farm, then disembark through a tin shed. It's embarrassing. We should drag our politicians by their fat stomachs to Singapore and show em how it's done. Then again that kind of infrastructure takes foresight and commitment, something our Government system does not understand.
Besides, with the pending global financial ****storm building mommentum I think in the next few years we will be fortunate if our Governments will be able to afford to put in so much as an airport roundabout!

The oversize block of flats may do, but the more user friendly ones make it to Portside.

One of the reasons the larger ships cannot make it to Portside is because of the height restriction placed on the Gateway Bridges by the airport approach.

Agree re Melbourne on the outside getting to the street, the way it is set up now is awful. Messy all round.

And I wish they would sort out inside as well.

For my home port airport that was built on a greenfields site, they could have done a lot better but as said above, it takes" takes foresight and commitment" which we don't seem to do too well, always playing "catch up".

Seriously, even third world airports aren't as bad as MEL. I recently visited Vientiane, Laos and from the touch down to out in the arrivals hall took less than 30 minutes and that included the time to process a visa on arrival as well as changing money in the baggage claim area. Even International airports in Indonesia now are more efficient than Melbourne.

All simply because the government sold all the airports off to the highest bidder, now all they care about is making money in retail and car parks. Go anywhere else in the world in every single way our airport are a joke. We do make a mean grossly overpriced car park though!

In MEL's defence they now have a separate crew priority line in the International hall at peak times; see, the visit to Officeworks for materials for a sign wasn't that hard! And most of the Customs and Quarantine staff are now actually quite polite. I think that there is construction in progress with areas walled off which is making the baggage hall more of a zoo than usual.

However, the airport still has along way to go to be world class. And Sydney is just a national disgrace.
