Board room high jinks and junkets.

Crisis, what crisis?

Reliably informed that the entire board and their families all headed up to New York the week before Christmas.

Strange way to cut costs. Especially when the rest of the business is going through the biggest slash and burn exercise in many years. Napkins are now not offered during cabin service. I Kidd you you not. That is how extreme the razor gang is attacking even the the most minuscule costs within the business. We are being told the future survival of the airline depends on everyone playing their part to avoid waste and cut costs in everything we do.

The board obviously didn't get that memo.

Board members all have Must Fly priority status meaning exactly that. They take priority over full fare paying passengers.

This little shindig would have been planned in advance. Meaning that at the very peak of the holiday season Qantas had to remove from sale 20-30 first class seats from sale. (40-60 when you consider the return leg). Simply appalling and reminds one of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

And of course then there were all the five star hotels and meals and shopping all charged back to the Qantas accounts.

Which of course is not a problem or not one that causes them to lose any sleep, at least while it remains out of the public domain.

Seems they like New York and do some of their best work there. Last time they were there they made Alan CEO.

Re the engagement lies. For those who may not be aware, there were no controls to stop the same individual re-doing the engagement survey over and over ( think managers trying to bolster participation rates and positive feedback ) some departments recorded over 200% participation rates and qantas actually published that for staff to see.
The highest returns were from office based departments ( operational staff too busy or too dis-engaged to even contemplate doing the waste of time survey)
It was clearly an exercise in futility designed so those in management could bring out the stupid kinds of statements Evans just has

New CEO

From what I remember, there were only a couple of senior managers who had the integrity not to be part of the APA bid, Borghetti and Storrie.

Either would be an excellent choice for QF's new CEO.

Engagement survey

How about a simple engagement survey.
One question only no spin,no fairy results.

SHOULD AJ AND BOARD RESIGN

YES

NO

Engagement:

Didn't they (management) introduce a new staff travel category for 'executives'?
So these 'new executives' were well and truly engaged as from day 1 they were able to purchase J seats rather than wait the x years as per others.

Gee, I'd be happy, start new job knowing full well that I'm about to get travel benefits, get home after 1st day and say to partner, guess what? we may be able to go 1st class on our 1st holiday. I'd be engaged.

OK I know staff travel isn't everything but for many, it is.

Have been told this is true.
New staff and here they target new management staff, are informed at all induction sessions that, new aircraft do not require maintenance, that engineering costs are too high in Australia, the importance of the JQ, etc.

So what do you get there? engaged staff who not only believe what they are being told but J class and potentially P class travel = I'm engaged.

What QF also gets is 'fresh blood' staff who may meet new people from many departments at their induction sessions but collectively, these people don't know much (about particular issues within the company) and certainly won't come across, crew, engineers, pilots, IT or Finance staff, marketing staff who have 20 years plus service who may say something negative during their 1st break.

That's how the likes of QF engage staff.

Regarding the "Evans" article, the strategy they are pursuing may have some credibility if it was supported by the financial results.
It's almost like they see it as a loss of face, and will never admit they have got it wrong. Because it's not their fault the strategy is failing, just everyone else's.
:ugh::ugh:

From AFR Fri 24th Jan 2014.

Indeed, Qantas remains very much an organisation of tribes where the only alignment is that head office is hated.

For any organisation to be successful you've got to align your people behind you across the business.
Investors wary about any Qantas frequent flyer float

I'd be very interested if someone could post or get me a copy of the internal document that said some departments had a 200% return rate.

So the people running the company are actually trusted by 1% of QF pilots... I can't believe that there'd be as many as 22 of them. Who are these people? Does QF have that many management pilots?

Mstr Caution 25th Jan 2014 00:37

Mrbigbird.

Hopefully Wirth is putting together a CV for her next gig post QF.

As the public face & supporter of AJ during the 2011 industrial action and grounding of the fleet.

It would be a disaster to see her replacing Alan and running the show.

Nassensteins Monster 25th Jan 2014 00:44

Maybe her boyfriend can get her a gig at the AWU or ACTU.

Borghetti and Storrie. Either would be an excellent choice for QF's new CEO.
Borghetti having been overlooked the job to finish QANTAS in it's current form in SYD, is now doing exactly the same thing from BNE.

What QANTAS needs is a CEO who has past experience of rescuing a airline from a similar predicament.

dragon man 25th Jan 2014 02:28

Gordon Bethune the man who saved Continental Airlines.

MC,
Wirth has about as much chance of being the next CEO as you or I.

A big fat Zero! :ok:

Qantas 787 25th Jan 2014 03:35

Where is Wirth by the way? Even since she was announced in that new role including marketing, she has been MIA. I think I saw one email to all employees about the Newsroom and that was it.

Mstr Caution 25th Jan 2014 03:56

The fluff pieces last year had you believe Joyce & Wirth were joined at the hip.

Alan would call Wirth at 6:30am in the morning for her to manage possible negative press coverage.

Ironic. That the subject of the press coverage are now the shining stars themselves.

Nassensteins Monster 25th Jan 2014 05:28

Olivia Wirth, poster girl of company management.

Maybe we should call her Miss Management?

Pretty apt all round eh?

Mstr Caution 25th Jan 2014 06:28

One of OW's memorable statements of the 2011 industrial action was along the lines of;

Its about the right for the company to manage the business.

I suppose the current financial performance has been a perfect indicator as to their performance.

One can only hope a new CEO affords this mob the same job security they were prepared to offer their own workforce.

Yeah, makes me sick when I read it again,

some memorable lines, lot's of them...chuckle :)

Just spent eight weeks working around Asia, had the pleasure to do the QF23/24 twice in that time on the 744 which replaced the A330 through this busy time, if it means anything to you all on here, the CC were simply brilliant on all occasions, worked their butts off in all cabins...:ok:

I don't know why Alan's not happy, he's gifted with some great staff and it's Australia Day! which inspired this video...

Time to be happy again Alan & Leigh and get back to the core business Qantas, it's you and your management team who are letting the side down, not the staff!

So Alan, happy Australia day, by the way, QF has seen many Australia Days come & go, a lot more than you have, its got something to do with the spirit of the place.....;)
