An Irishman wants a job, but the foreman won't hire him until he passes a little maths test.

Here is your first question, the foreman said. "Without using numbers, represent the number 9."

"Without numbers?" The Irishman says? "Dat is easy." And proceeds to draw three trees.

"What's this?" the boss asks.

"Have you ain't got no brain? Tree and tree plus tree makes 9" says the Irishman.

"Fair enough," says the boss. "Here's your second question. Use the same rules, but this time the number is 99."

The Irishman stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree... "Ere you go."

The boss scratches his head and says, "How on earth do you get that to represent 99?"

"Each of da trees is dirty now. So, it's dirty tree, and dirty tree, plus dirty tree. Dat makes 99."

The boss is getting worried that he's going to actually have to hire this Irishman, so he says, "All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100."

The Irishman stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says, "'Ere you go. One hundred."

The boss looks at the attempt. "You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!"

The Irishman leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and whispers, "A little dog came along and pooped by each tree.
So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, which makes ONE HUNDRED!"

The Irishman is now head of Qantas

Is $1billion conservative?

$1 Billion dollar loss - then go screaming to the government/media and call for IR reform.

Hasn't Little Al has been a wee wee quiet lately?

And these snippets to the media are all very conveniently timed.

Qantas previously reported a $252 million loss for the six months to December and 5000 job losses.
IG Markets strategist Evan Lucas said the consensus was that Qantas would report a loss of about $500 million, with the fleet writedowns possibly taking the total up to $1 billion.
“It is going to take a really big hit on depreciation of its ageing fleet, but Jetstar and Qantas domestic are also having to compete very hard on price, which is creating issues.”
Interesting link Spey, and probably why the little bloke has been very quiet of late.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, if you collect what has been said since 2011 until now, I think AJ catches himself out on his strategy as each year passed by.. if you have the time, now is a good time to review what was said before he reveals all at the end of the month.. As many have said on this thread, now with more that 1.5 million hits, time and time again the management have blamed everything and everyone else but never themselves. I think all the good people that are left in the Qantas group since AJ and Co set off on their crusade have done a wonderful job "keeping the show on the road," under these extremely trying circumstances created by the management, kudos to all of you, it's still a great airline!

The last week or so I read through all of this thread again, I was reminded of all the great contributions from some great people who demonstrated their love for Qantas just by taking the time to post, it also reminded me of the powerful John Singleton interview back in 2012, (also includes the EK tie up Inside Business interview with AJ where he really hams it up) I think Singo was right on the money back then..

Sums up the thread I think...

Especially the part @25:30 "If we do nothing we'll soon be flying Sydney to Melbourne on Emirates"

Good video.

IR Reform

There are managers running around at the moment saying that the current redundancy provisions are going to be changed.

FEDSEC, is this possible if they go to FWA and cry poor?

SOPS 4th Aug 2014 11:23

This appears to be lurching from one disaster to the next....is anyone actually in control? It seems to me the little guy has left the building weeks ago.

600ft-lb 4th Aug 2014 12:08

It's probably more to do with making the most of this opportunity. Everyone knows they are going to make a loss they may as well make it a huge one so they pat themselves on the back next year with a great job they have done. Never waste a crisis - even a self created one.

Cry poor and do what? They can vary the award by agreement of the parties or they can apply to have the agreement terminated.

If you do some research, you will find that it is very difficult to terminate an active agreement. [2010] FWA 6468.

Not Good we all hope! :ugh:

When?

When will AJ get the 'tap on the shoulder' ?

As soon as the current bloodletting is done. Shareholders would want to present a very lean organisation to the new leader.

Not far away.

Australian airline Qantas reduced to ?junk? status - World Socialist Web Site

Is it true that the money received by Qantas from Emirates for booking pax onto a Emirates flight has been reduced from 18 to 10%. Well done AJ!

What The 7th Aug 2014 05:00

I believe that QF pax using the EK lounge in DXB cost QF $200 per visit. Hence the recent change to eligibility rules for use of lounges by Qantas Club members.

Great deal done by those involved. Ansett failing was not a fluke!!!

Low-cost airlines see softer ticket sales

The Australian market is proving challenging for long-haul, low-cost airlines due to a mix of soft consumer demand and overcapacity, according to Singapore Airlines's Scoot and AirAsia X.

"Australia has been a bit of a tough place to operate for the last year or so," Scoot chief executive Campbell Wilson said at the CAPA Australia Pacific Aviation Summit on Thursday. "I think we've seen that manifest in decisions by airlines to change gauge, change frequencies and in certain cases pull out of city pairs."
Mr Wilson said the downturn was cyclical, given Australia had been a strong market just 18 months ago.

Scoot, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, offers flights to Australia from its Singapore hub. Rival AirAsia X, which is based in Kuala Lumpur, has increased its capacity to Australia by 40 per cent over the last year.
AirAsia X head of commercial Australia & New Zealand Stuart Myerscough said demand had softened noticeably in recent weeks.

"It is hard to pinpoint any one particular issue but I think there are a number of compounding issues," he said. "You see minor softening with all sorts of minor events whether they be political with elections or financial with budget announcements and of course the [Malaysia Airlines] incidents as well have quite an impact on the industry in general."

Mr Myerscough said the MH17 crash had given potential travellers reason to pause and think about whether it was worth booking an overseas trip. "People are reminded there is a reason why not," he said.
Jetstar International, a rival to Scoot and AirAsia X, has also been struggling to fill its planes after a large increase in capacity to the Bali market and dampened demand for flights to Thailand due to the political situation in that country.

Nok Air chief executive Patee Sarasin, who runs a domestic airline in Thailand, said his carrier had been profitable before the coup, but had since turned unprofitable.

Nok Air is combining with Scoot for the Nok Scoot joint venture, which will offer long-haul flights from Thailand. Mr Sarasin said the first flights were likely to be to Japan, Korea and China but Australia could be a destination in the longer term.

Thai AirAsia X is also considering flights to Australia from its Bangkok hub and its Indonesian arm may offer flights from Bali to Australia as early as next year, with Melbourne-Bali tipped as the likely first route

Hmm, now the "cannibals" are starving.. and guess what amazing strategy AJ and Co kept working on when the signs were there more than 12 months ago, the LCC long haul model, which appears now to be the wrong decision entirely.

Meanwhile CX & ANZ prove otherwise as people on here have already said..

What the biggest worry is not much to look forward to and yet Emirates was meant to save QF Intl.............how big will that loss be?

What the biggest worry is not much to look forward to and yet Emirates was meant to save QF Intl.............how big will that loss be?
Official answer to that..

Mr Evans said the partnership with Emirates was performing to Qantas' financial expectations in light of a tough international market with an oversupply of capacity.

Doesn't matter, it appears now another airline will buy in now restrictions are looser according to Gareth Evans, I guess it's bonuses all round next year!

Read more: Qantas predicts another airline will buy in now restrictions are looser

Mr Evans said employee morale at Qantas had taken a hit as a result of the airline's decision to slash 5000 jobs as part of the cost-cutting plan.
He said morale was expected to improve once the transformation program was completed.

"The employees at Qantas have a tremendous passion for the organisation," he said. "This truly is an iconic business that tugs at the heartstrings of a lot of people, and especially the employees that work there."
my bold..

Wow, finally......you said it Gareth...:ugh:
