The Shovel

As a ignorant Cadet, apparently, I'm at a loss to understand MST caution's logic.

FFRATS, what should I have done when Qantas stopped hiring? Just stay in GA?.....And of course by me not talking the job, Jetstar wouldn't have been able to expand and in fact probably would have shrunk or even dissolved by now.
Your years of experience in aviation is showing....yeah its "all going perfectly to plan". Alan has so much foresight.

Just like Red Q (proclaim Asia/China is the biggest untapped market then pull out of Sin and HK to LHR and code share with EK), the EK tie-up (after SIN AND MAS said NO!), J* HK/JP/Sin/SGN, 65% domestic (over) capacity etc. list goes on and on. So much planning falling into place.

You almost sound pleased for him...

Green Gobby

The program is hugely competitive and the young ones tend to be pretty bright.
Shining light this one. States only the "FACTS" :O

Edit due soldier-of-fortune post.
You seriously think Alan has stuck to a plan :ugh: reactionary management at best.

QF publicly denied they will be axing 3000 jobs - as per press release Fri pm.

Nothing mentioned about 9000, so that could well be true.

Bloody disgrace whatever it is.

PS: Big giggle re Ffrats. Been a VERY long time since I've heard mention of Freddie Fox's Rat**** Autothrottle. The GOD's.... Who'd a thunk the airline killed by people earning in a year what it took 12 jumbos a year to earn back then....

SOPS 21st Feb 2014 10:19

Serious question. If you stop flying to London from Dubai yourself, but stick a QF code share on an EK flight, is that a reduction in services to London, or not?

If this happens, how does one get to London on a premium economy ticket? EK don't have PE so I guess that leaves Cathay, BA ?

Mstr Caution 21st Feb 2014 11:30

Its anyone's guess as to what Alan will come up with on the 27th.

Remember. Alan's got form.

He provided evidence to a senate inquiry that he woke up one morning in 2011 and decided to ground an airline.

*** Im not advocating he's going to ground the airline ***

But it does indicate the traits of a knee jerk management style.

If Alan was working to script. That he was following a pre determined path. Continuing to push the 4 pillar strategy house.

Then why the need for a "Strategic Review"?

Perhaps the outcome of a strategic review will determine the the previous business transformation wasn't working well for the group.

Again. If the 4 pillar strategy was working AJ wouldn't be calling for a review. They would either continue or accelerate the program.

I wonder if the big institutionals have finally said to Al. Enoughs is enough we've given you a few years and we are yet to see the returns?

Maybe a new CEO, but not yet!

Alan's review may actually be the new CEO's plan. Introduced by Alan to allow him to escape with a golden parachute and a smooth transition to a new management team.

All will be revealed in 6 days.

Qantas 787 21st Feb 2014 17:37

They can deny the 3000 number - it will probably be a lot more so to claim the rumour is wrong in the press is accurate.

QF might not pull out of LHR but replacing QF metal with EK will be classified as mainintaining the serving of LHR

JNB will be gone - if the ACCC would come to the party and realise the current arrangement was not a monopoly it would be saved. So leaving one carrier and one stop to SYD is great for the consumer isn't it ACCC?

I can't help thinking the little bloke is trying to do a Willie (IAG) Walsh, kinda thing, the pattern seems to be the same, keep peddling doom and gloom sack lots of people (like BA did) in the build up to what IAG is today.... takes a few years, the punters become numb to it all, Jetstar becomes the model, Qantas Int becomes the BMI? :hmm:..

IAG boss Willie Walsh rules out more European buys - Telegraph

Basically a bean counters picnic... They just love it, think they are so clever, but always forgetting one little thing, it's the operational staff that bring in the cash on a daily basis... whilst these guys in suits chat about their great success over a lunch surrounded by rock pools...or something similar...

It's going to be a long week, I feel for you all.. It's horrible the way these guys do business these days and the Government is in on it, both sides... Cold, cold calculating people.... they don't care about the damage they inflict on good Aussie families...

Fears Qantas will slash 3000 jobs in cost-cutting drive

Shares in Qantas rose 5 per cent to $1.25 on Friday after Macquarie Equities analysts raised their recommendation on the stock to ''out-perform''.

Look at these pri$ks at Macquarie gloating over how much money they are going to make by pushing the suits barrow, as if they haven't cleaned up enough already over the years from our aviation infrastructure... government partnership..

Yeah, no attacks there...

Stop being so gen Y where it's all about you and everybody gets a ribbon.

You say 'FACTS' I say you speak CRAP.

You want an Answer to a question that ends with JQ would not have survived with out YOU! :D

When Alan and Co announce their wonderful achievements on the 27th, is there a live video feed so that we can watch this mathematical genius destroy what's left of our national icon?

Keg 22nd Feb 2014 00:12

TC is saying that no one should have any help and yet he conveniently ignores that his debt is government backed.
....and the IR framework very different to Oz with virtual slavery allowed for baggage handlers, cooks, cleaners, etc. let's not forget the tax regime either.

Insider Trader 22nd Feb 2014 00:22

I am hearing from a couple of sources around Martin Place that QAN may apply to the ASX for a trading halt on Wednesday afternoon as said announcement may involve the sale of "non-core airline assets", most notably engineering, catering and FF program.

It may not be sacking 3000 staff, but certainly gets 3000 staff off the QF books.

Mstr Caution 22nd Feb 2014 01:13

IT.

Interesting angle

Qantas group employs people in more companies than I can count.

If a company is sold. The head count is off the Qantas books.

Sunfish 22nd Feb 2014 01:33

Insider trader, the belief of the Board is that the entire value of QF is in the brand and that the services it supplies can be delivered by monkeys.

This is similar to the Carnival Cruise Lines business model:

1. the. Black gang, staff unseen by the public are ragged Indians and Filipinos who never have contact with passengers except in very rare situations.

2. "Front of house" staff speak English and come from Eastern Europe and developing countries.

3. Staff are deliberately chosen from a mix of nationalities on the "divide and rule" principle.

4. All staff are employed through agencies on one year contracts. starting dates are staggered so that about 10% are up for renewal and have to leave the ship at the end of each voyage.

The purpose of this strategy is to ensure no unionisation is possible and any who try can be easily removed.

Business performance is achieved by slavish adherence to detailed manuals for every single function on the ship down to the washing of the underside of chairs at set intervals.

Outsourcing is used to the hilt. The bar staff buy the rights to run the bars. A doctor buys the rights to run the medical clinic, etc.

That is the model you are headings for: indentured slavery.

Jobs go in Qantas shake-up - The West Australian

Angle of Attack 22nd Feb 2014 04:26

I wonder how senior will be the Istanbul A380 base?

Abbot is now saying that 'Qantas must get its house in order', and that 'there are plenty of signs that Qantas is serious about putting its house in order'.

Which begs the question, WTF have those who are paid handsomely for running the 'house' been doing for the last few years?

So shovel are you saying Joyce came into the job and his plan was to shrink the airline, cost thousands of families their livelihood and post enormous losses on his watch. Are you really saying that was his golden plan as CEO.

He may be a nasty piece of work but I severely doubt that was his plan.

I think you may be the delusional one. Actually, do you ever look in the mirror and say "geez I'm a cock.". No I guess not, your persona is probably much like Joyce's - a dipstick in denial.

King William III 22nd Feb 2014 05:04

Okay...perhaps someone with a better grasp of IR law, and the appropriate EA, could explain what a sell-off of, for example, QF Engineering, would mean for all it's 'employees' benefits etc?
Would they have to pay redundancies or can they annex the 'business' and all it's minions, then in 6 months complain that 'QF Engineering Pty Ltd' are too expensive and pull the contract effectively shutting the place down and saving millions in redundancies....and then get 457's by the thousand with TA's blessing??

Extreme I know but not beyond the realms of the little fella's deviousness....

Chad Gates 22nd Feb 2014 05:18

have to pay redundancies
I have heard that this is the reason for the asset (terminals etc....) sales.
