Qantas starts Perth-Auckland seasonal A330 flights-finally

A new seasonal twice-weekly service between Auckland and Perth (Dec-Jan), adding almost 1,000 seats per week to what is currently a monopoly route over the busy Christmas and summer holiday period.

First service from Perth will be 6 December 2013 and the last service from Auckland will be 1 February 2014. The aircraft will be an internationally configured A330 with Skybeds in Business.

QF112 will depart Auckland at 11:40am and arrive in Perth at 2:05pm

QF111 will depart Perth at 8:30pm and arrive in Auckland at 7:50am

New Auckland-Perth service as Qantas and Emirates partnership launches

Alan Joyce says the new route is possible from just using the assets better as the aircraft would otherwise be sitting on the ground over the weekend.

Its been long overdue as Air NZ has had a monopoly on this route since it started it back in 1980 with a DC-10 service. If route performs well we could expect it to be a year round operation. The new flight also connects with EK flight from DXB.

If they had any vision they would look at Perth- Auckland-Dallas. The problem is i dont think there is enough 400s to do it.

...Therefore the 767 should do it! (Via several extra stops) :}

I wouldn't be admitting as an airline manager that the Perth - AKL is long overdue as AIRNZ has had a monopoly on the route since 1980.

Are they saying its taken 33 years to figure out they needed to compete on that route!

waren9 15th Aug 2013 01:48

does qf still have intl c/crew in akl?

they were paxing them to aus for a while i think

Skystar320 15th Aug 2013 02:24

Wooohooo! anything to stop the AirNz charging balloon prices and dismal service.

gate4 15th Aug 2013 03:14

These flights most likely meet demand from ex pat kiwi's returning for end of year holidays from the mines etc... it won't dent Airnz at all!

Skystar 320 ... you'd better get back on the "crystal meth" for your next post.

pigdriver 15th Aug 2013 05:25

I agree with you sky star 320. Air enzed does have dismal service, and they charge like a wounded bull and you get thrown on one of the clapped out 76's. The 777's offer a better product, but the service is still shocking. ( not that QF is much better!!)...
Good to see QF actually starting something new.

Except for a period in the early 90's when Qantas did this a few times a week in a 767.

waren9 15th Aug 2013 06:06

just did a random search for later in aug.

cheapest seats around the 600-700 mark each way from air nz for a nearly 3000nm sector.

the direct flights now all seem to be on the 772 also.

monopoly? not in practice when there are other cheap 1 stop options.

Never touched the stuff... Just saying it how it is after being and have friends on the service.

I have however not been on the 777 service - it may have changed.

They have ex A330 crews in NZ who now pax to MEL/SYD and operate A380 services. Really good cabin crew if youre lucky enough to get them.

I never worked out why ANZ didnt sell a fare with UAE as their flights used to be timed such that it would have been a great transfer. I would think that 2 QF flights a week is not going to generate any new pax just take some off the indirect flights on those days.

waren9 15th Aug 2013 10:17

ah, good to hear.

used to work with a couple of them. :)

Timing

I wonder why they don't have the aircraft leave in the morning. Not withstanding the incoming flight. I travel this route, and would love to depart in the morning after my shift, and get back to NZ the same day. As I do now but have to transit Melb or Syd.

jarden 15th Aug 2013 13:38

re-timing

I believe the 330 only comes available after completing a SYD-PER rotation earlier in the day and so can't start any earlier, also it has to be towed from domestic to international before being prepared for the service to AKL.
