Most trusted profession - 2012 list.
I see pilots made 5th. Paramedics top the chart again. It's a pity ,in their case, that trust doesn't translate into decent pay.
|
I second that about the paramedics, their pay and conditions for what they do is nothing short of embarrassing.
|
Amen to that.
Interesting name you have there priapism!!!!!!!! |
As compared with 'poohead' ?!?!?!
b. |
Couldn't agree more, Priapism. You guys have been fighting for decent conditions for years.
Keep it up! :E |
The Mica Para's are amazing guys/gals.They would leave a Dr for dead with their fast acting abilities. They are worth far more than any pilot that's for sure:-)
No 5 for pilots hey? I was always about 5th past the post in a 6 kid race at school so I guess some things never change!:E Wmk2 |
And the Wooden gong goes to?
After Priapism's thrusting post you are probably aching to see the list.
Here is the enlarged list, hot off the job and published this morning in all its glory. It is totally engorged with the Top 20 professions! Pilots have slipped out to fifth and Nurses have slid into fourth! Wood ;) have liked to have seen the Doctors on top of the Nurses for a change. Hairdressers have just made it in by the short and curlies! Anyway, swell job to all those upright and pulsing professionals! :ok: Reader's Digest Trust Poll 2012 Professions 1.Paramedics 2.Firefighters 3. Rescuevolunteers 4. Nurses 5. Pilots 6.Doctors 7.Pharmacists 8.Veterinarians 9. ArmedForces personnel 10.Farmers 11.Police 12.Scientists 13.Teachers 14.Dentists 15.Childcare workers 16.Bus/train/tram drivers 17. Chefs 18.Hairdressers 19.Meteorologists 20.Waiters |
So you lot actually read Readers Digest? How quaint :}
|
Only while waiting to see the Doctor
|
Or while catching a bus/train/tram to get a hair cut or on the way to the dentists.
|
It's a bit of a worry to see the cops & ADF personal half way down not to mention teachers & childcare workers beyond that!!
How apt the Met guys/gals are almost on the bottom & where's ATC?......the list isn't that long I guess:E Wmk2 |
|
At the risk of sounding like a snob at least half of these "professions" are jobs (vocations perhaps by the modern definition for some of them). Hair dresser or waiter or tram driver as a profession? Give me a break. Check out the definition of profession. Even pilot is marginal depending which definition/criteria you use. Yet another example of the dumbing down of our modern society.
|
I kinda agree with ya there 'HST', pilot as a profession is marginal I reckon in fact I've always maintained it's a more a 'trade' than anything else hence it's not paid that well especially anymore when compared to IT jobs etc.
Like most jobs it's (pilot) a learned skill being a plane driver & seeing as you need very little in the way of formal education to be a plane driver then a trade is more suited to the job.:-) Wmk2 |
Most of the list seems about right to me! Paramedics complete a lot more study than pilots, they also face more non-standard situations and very frequent requalification than pilots. It is worth noting that Intensive Care Paramedics of the Special Operations Team (the guys & gals who fly on ANSW's 13 helicopters and conduct remote area/technical retrieval) actually earn more than the EMS Pilots, and a lot more than regional pilots.
Having served in the ADF, worked as a commercial pilot and engaged in Paramedic study (currently, also conducted a number of SARs as a crewman), I'd say the list is about right. Like most jobs it's (pilot) a learned skill being a plane driver & seeing as you need very little in the way of formal education to be a plane driver then a trade is more suited to the job.:-) Wmk2 |
From the ACCC website.....
'A disciplined group of individuals who adhere to high ethical standards and uphold themselves to, and are accepted by, the public as possessing special knowledge and skills in a widely recognised, organised body of learning derived from education and training at a high level, and who are prepared to exercise this knowledge and these skills in the interest of others.
Inherent in this definition is the concept that the responsibility for the welfare, health and safety of the community shall take precedence over other considerations.' |
& where's ATC?. |
Since when does waving ping-pong bats entitle you to trust?? |
So meteorologists aren't scientists it appears. They are told to avoid windows I believe, to the point that I was once told in the old BK briefing office (early 80s) that the fog would not lift until 2300z, when a glance out the window showed it had already!
I knew a meteorologist once; he seemed like a good bloke. He denied that they are trained to do rain dances and animal sacrifices, but we pilots know the truth! Sometimes it would be nice to be able to provide feedback to the actual person who wrote up the TAF! BoM how about a feedback blog site to get your meteorologists up the ladder of trust? |
I guess those stickers worked then.
