$360k going rate for Aussie based A330 Captains?

China Southern Airlines is recruiting current A330 Captains for three new pilot bases, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane Australia.

Ad is on AFAP. $18k USD nett per month.

How do you get away with not paying Aussie tax?

airdualbleedfault 19th Aug 2011 05:27

Beverly, simple answer is you don't.

If they are only paying chinese tax and you are a resident in Oz, you will pay full Australian tax, simple really.
Tax treaty only counts if you are a non resident of Australia for tax purposes ie more than 183 days out of the country, you and your family living in china ( :yuk: ) etc.

"If they are only paying chinese tax and you are a resident in Oz, you will pay full Australian tax, simple really."

Airdualbleed,

Are you really sure about that?

Its not to late to edit your post.

Keg 19th Aug 2011 06:17

I thought you only paid the 'balance' between Chinese tax and Aussie tax. So if you've 'paid' 30% in China, you only have to make up the difference to Aussie tax- 16% or thereabouts.

Happy for someone to indicate otherwise.

$360,000?????????????

US$18,000 x 12 = $216,000

A$1 = US$1.05

$216,000 = A$205,700.

Not disgusting but also not particularly stellar, particularly in light of the working conditions that may be associated with it.

What you end up with in your pocket (Tax ramifications etc) is a separate matter.

caneworm 19th Aug 2011 06:43

There are a few possible scenarios here.

1. You take LOA & you elect to take a China basing and commute to and from China. Yes, you will be issued with (china) tax receipts, however as you are commuting you are not deemed non-resident for tax purposes and at the very least you will required to pay the ATO the difference between chinese & oz tax. Even if you don't commute and leave your family in oz, you will still pay tax.

2. You take LOA & you elect to take an oz basing. Yes, you will be issued with (china) tax receipts, but since you are based, (read domiciled) in oz, the ATO couldn't give 2 hoots about your dodgy tax receipts and as a consequence you will pay 'full-freight' tax.

3. You take LOA and elect to take a china basing. You pack up your whole family and move wholus-bolus to china. In this case I would spend the money and get water-tight advice (in writing) from my accountant AND the ATO.

4. You resign from your oz employer and move to live and work in another country. In this case, pretty sure your in a strong position regarding tax obligations, but you become an aviation gypsie for the rest of your career.

airdualbleedfault, not 100% sure but I think the 180 day rule has either been removed or made more restrictive. You may recall wayne swann changed the rules, for the worse, back in '08.

As always, get all the info. What could be a great adventure may end up being a (financial) disaster.

How about starting with a search of the ATO website?

It is good and indeed the market rate, at least the money anyway. $18k is net of Chinese tax, their rates are very similar to those in Australia. Under the double taxation agreement you don't get taxed twice, you just pay any balance if the Gross income would have incurred more tax if paid in Oz versus China. A rough calculation indicates very little if any would be owing, maybe 10k, so its roughly 18k in the hand. But flogging around in China...that's another story.

Normasars 19th Aug 2011 08:11

For ANYBODY to sit here and say that > $200k is crap money beggers belief.:ugh:

It is no wonder the fare paying passengers think pilots are overpaid.

Watch the huge response to this offer. THAT WILL ILLUSTRATE THE MARKET RATE. If the response is overwhelming(which I am tipping it will be), then the T's&C's are very acceptable in today's market.

teresa green 19th Aug 2011 08:57

My young bloke had a look at it, but its only a three year contract, and in the present economic climate, we had a chat, and we both agree he stays where he is, JQ.

Flying Tiger 19th Aug 2011 10:11

You would still be a resident for Australian tax purposes. However airline provides documentation confirming tax has been taken care of in China, where tax brackets are not too dissimilar to Australian. My understanding is the treaty ensures you pay only the difference between that and Australian tax, which amounts to pretty much nothing.

Whether any money actually changes hands between the airline and the Chinese govt is nothing for us to be concerned with. They've probably done a deal on the grounds of national interest so they can make it attractive to pilots, whilst at the same time incurring minimum cost. In the hand is all that counts.

My information is that some went to Air China a couple of years ago, based in MEL and SYD, and they are beneficiaries of a similar arrangement.

I did some figures as to what gross amount you would have to earn in Australia to earn US$17,950 pcm net. I came up with approximately A$400,000 per year, plus super. Don't trust my research. Plug it into the ATO tax calculator and see what you come up with.

Maybe the three year contract only makes sense for those in their 50's. Sandpitters wanting to come home, or JQ guys wanting a $tep up. Not sure about QF or CX...

KABOY 19th Aug 2011 10:32

Before everyone feels that the deal may or may not be worth accepting, I suggest you go through the selection hoops, receive the offer then consider.

The chinese are very selective about who fly's the aircraft and how you deal with their airspace. You f*&#up in their airspace and you will find yourself out of a contract immediately!

So to all the A330 gods out there, it is not fait accompli i'm afraid.

It's tough being a gypsy!

aulglarse 19th Aug 2011 12:54

Try attempting a conversation with your fellow crew during an 8 hr flight...unless you speak a little Mandarin or Cantonese of course. So could another 100k a year for a foreign airline really make ones career awefully exciting?.:bored::bored::bored:

Gnadenburg 19th Aug 2011 13:56

For ANYBODY to sit here and say that > $200k is crap money beggers belief
Flown into China? Worked on a Chinese contract? Worked with developing world pilots or cadets?

Money is crap.

And the risk? Who will be fcked over first in a China slowdown? Yes, contracted expat pilots. Cock up in China or upset someone. Add to the risk of coming offside of the system.

Ossie pilots. Dumb and dumber....

Normasars 19th Aug 2011 14:09

Gnadenburg,

Dumb and dumber hey?

Well I'll just let that slide my friend as I cruise the Swan River on my 25' Searay with Hilux turbo diesel to tow it. Actually this weekend I think I am out for a ride on my new 1198R. Better still, the forecast is 24C CAVOK and fresh air. Actually come to think about it, I might take the new M3 out for a drive. All on my 35hrs per month and home every night.

But I forgot, you have it all up there eh?

Who's dumb I hear you ask?

flamingmoe 19th Aug 2011 14:27

Dear god Norm...just when I think i've seen all the biggest knobs in aviation, a new contender emerges.

Normasars 19th Aug 2011 14:43

Flaming,

Out of context. Something about tongue in cheek. But, I won't accept the title from Gnads, that's just crap.

If people don't like what the offer is, they wont apply. Simple. But if it ticks all the boxes for somebody else, well good for them.

However, for some guy in HK to say that the money is crap in Oz is totally farcical. The reason the "package" is good in HK is because it's a crap place to live. No matter how you dress it up, it's not ML/SYD/BN/PH etc etc. And as a result, the trade off is better remuneration.

What I am alluding to Flamingmoe is the "LIFESTYLE" in OZ is something that money can not buy. And in OZ $200k is good coin. I don't care what you say.

The market will decide. And I am guessing that there will be sh1tloads of applicants. I may be wrong and more than happy to cop it if I am.

oicur12.again 19th Aug 2011 14:50

Norma,

Making me homesick dude.

Toruk Macto 19th Aug 2011 15:11

18,000 AUD and about %5 Aussie tax to make up the difference would be ok.
