Canberra, Brissie and Perth by the looks of things too!

it'd be nice if just for once, QF wouldn't start up a 'new' organisation to then undercut those already doing the job. What it means is eventually we lose all the experienced operators and end up with those who couldn't get a job anywhere else. It'll dumb down the work force and in the long term, safety and care on the ramp will suffer.

Jethro Gibbs 13th Aug 2011 10:46

Question is what happens to current experienced operators positions nowall these advertised positions are part time casual Qantas really is showing itself now to be the Dirty Company it is and the union that signed off on this crap is no better.

bubblyguy 13th Aug 2011 11:46

QGS has been around since late 2009.

It has only been recently that there has been a big push to have more staff.

If you look at previous job ads you can see this or even do a business entity search will show it was registered back in 2009.

So it certainly is nothing new. Just a big intake and increase ahead.

Are you: Looking for a part-time, rotating shift position?
I am always looking for a part time job with crap hours of course!

Is it only me that finds this comical? While QF continue their campaign of finding the cheapest labour, their competitors continue to $hit all over them! Its Comedy Central!

'ABOUT THE COMPANY
Qantas is the world's second oldest airline. It was founded in the Queensland outback in 1920 and is Australia’s largest domestic
and international airline.
Qantas have built a reputation for excellence in safety,
operational reliability, engineering and maintenance
and customer service.'

Does anyone else think this statement is
about to become obsolete?

Yes sadly. :( :( :(

Every time you outsource, you sacrifice an opportunity to add value to your product. Do it badly and you lose significant value add and eventually profit.

Outsource your photocopier requirements by all means. If your supplier screws up you suffer a minor inconvenience (unless you are a large legal or accounting firm). There is no "value add" to lose either if your copies are not nice and crisp.

Now fast forward to baggage handling. Once you outsource that, there goes the opportunity to ask for, and receive "extra special handling" for a prized possession. There goes the opportunity for your staff to go that extra mile for someone. The most you can hope for is that the error rate/lost baggage numbers don't increase.

The ultimate management fantasy is the "fulfillment company" model which is where Qantas is heading. This model assumes every part of the business can be outsourced and the Board and Senior management sit in their offices drinking champagne and raking in money.

The reality is that the numerous interface between outsourced parts of the business inherent with this model impose crippling transaction costs on the overall business through the extra layers of management and the burden of coordination - and of course when Two or more businesses are involved, no one takes responsibility for the look and feel of the finished product do they?

I am amazed IF any Qantas Pilots are in favour of this. :ugh:

I have never been with Qantas, but spent my whole 45 years in the Industry with Aussie registered aircraft being flown by Aussie Pilots all over the World.

Some of the things I have seen when places use this cheap contract labour instead of dedicated Professionals employed by the Airlines would put you off the idea. :(

Jethro Gibbs 14th Aug 2011 06:11

I would think Forstaff should be concerned that they will soon be screwed over by Qantas they will then be left with a business with no work and employees with nothing to do then all Trades will be added to the Qantas Ground Services web site and anyone who wants to stay on at Avalon will be transferred over to QGD to be be partime / casual NO Permanent employees at all That's if Qantas even remain at Avalon.

Propstop 14th Aug 2011 08:31

I for one would not like to work for such an organisation. I have been 45 years as a LAME and have worked predominantly overseas, and with some dodgy employers, also some of the best.
The current Qantas employment ideas seem to be lifted from Dickensonian times.
I expect the next thing is that all QF group employees will have to buy their own computer terminals, and pay for access, to be able to carry out their job.
I also expect they will have monthly deductions to pay for the services, such as toilets etc supplied by the employer. Naturally the contract they will sign will be in the Cayman Islands or such off shore location away from Australian employment laws.
Having been a regular QF traveller for many years both domestic and international I now try and avoid them like the plague, and many people I speak to have the same idea. They are not the ordinary leisure traveller either.

In for a penny, save a pound

Correct. QGS is nothing new. It has been 'sitting in the background' for a while awaiting it's 'call to arms'. QF, I mean JQ, made some mistakes with EGH when they set them up as they were meant to canibalise QF ramp, but in reality they are not a heck of lot cheaper. Hence the birth of QGS. They will eventually grow, pick up more and more ramp tenders etc, until the memory of the 'good ol days' and the former ramp ways are just that - a memory from yesteryear. Part timers, casuals, no overtime and complete incompetence from a work force to be filled by buffoons, plane spotters and nuftys is the QF ramp handling vision of the future.
This story is to be con't, to be sure.......

Qantas Ground Services After the 24 Aug there is no doubt that the Careers section will be filled with every position imaginable including LAMES / AMES everything will be casual / partime fulltime positions will be a thing of the past.:ugh::(

I just cannot believe Qantas really want this. :(

I have worked off shore where they have this, never as good as having your own Professionals on the ramp.

When we were in the USA, first push back departure at JFK ITR and I wanted to do it but the handling company insisted they do it.

All done with just one Lady, driving the tractor with a head set on talking to the Pilots, myself and the local Mechanics followed in a van.

She got it to the disconnect point okay, jumped out of the tractor, disconnected the tow bar, then reversed the tractor, only trouble was the aircraft followed her, she had not even asked the Pilots to park the brakes.

Another day on arrival the guide lights were U/S and nobody knew what to do, I just marshalled our aircraft into the gate with hand signals, none of them had even been trained in marshalling. :(

Another time (different contract) we were overnight at CKS Taipei, I was in the jump seat for the flight back to Saigon, during the pushback there was a minor problem (I cannot remeber what it was now) and the Captain started telling the guy on the headset. I told him that he was wasting his time, as not only was he not an Engineer but he barely spoke English, sure enough when the pushback was finised he just said bye and left us to decide whether to go or get back in to a gate. He had done his job.

Do Qantas Pilots really want this sort of thing in Australia. :ugh:

Jethro Gibbs 15th Aug 2011 09:23

Do Qantas Pilots really want this sort of thing in AustraliaThey are not going to get a choice the unions are stuffed by FWA and Qantas Management could not care less they will get a big pay or payout.:ugh:

Have to agree with nearly everything that has already been said about outsourcing. There is one thing though that continues to bug me, and that is, that the majority opinion seems to be that people that are employed on some second (or third) tier agreement are lacking in skills, competency or motivation. The truth is, and I see it everyday, that most men and women taking positions with the likes of QGS or Jetstar or Toll Dnata or Tiger etc etc are probably more educated, motivated and career driven than their olden day predecessors. The reality is, that every day the world becomes more competitive and it's this competition that puts any employer in a high demand industry such as aviation in the box seat to dictate ever decreasing terms and conditions. Sure, it can be said that no-one is forced to accept that, but the option is to not be in the "game".
Most people and willing to take a chance, try it out and back themselves to go to the higher levels that still exist. Some make it, most don't, that's the competition amongst ourselves.
It is not true that "you pay peanuts & you get monkeys", I have worked with (and still working with) many exceptional people who should be doing better but struggle with two jobs to meet their commitments.
When the supply of people lining up for aviation jobs dries up, then QANTAS, Virgin et al will have no choice but to up the ante. We do deserve better, but I can't see that happening any time soon unfortunately.
By the way why is it that if you have an interest in aviation and you're not a pilot or LAME, people think that you're a buffoon, plane spotter or a nufty? Everyone does their bit to keep the machine rolling, right or wrong? :ugh:

Right !! Everybody plays their part in a successful business. Everyone at all levels, agreed.
My comments were not targeted at the entire worldwide brotherhood of rampies, and I apologise if it came across that way. My career spanning 30 years has seen me work within almost every field of aviation, including extensive ramp operations. I have noted in Australia, a decline in the past 10 years of the quality of rampies. That is not aimed at all and sundry, but is a generic statement. Organisations that go on cost cutting witch hunts making 20+ year rampies redundant while replacing them with part time inexperienced staff are not strengthening their skills base. I know I know, this is not happenning everywhere, but it is happenning and spreading.

Donalduck 16th Aug 2011 00:52

The last of the "Good People" are retiring and moving on...

It is not just Qantas that pays peanuts...I have seen a lot of monkeys employed in the last few years in ground ops...
Just to give you an idea... my company (regional ground ops for mostly Virgin) recently employed an ex-Ansett guest services agent...
16 odd years ago- wage for less work= $65000/pa full time.
Today- I am one of the bosses where I work... I spend at least 70 hours per week at the airport... all casual... wage= $64000/pa casual.

Go figure!
