QF cancels flights to Queenstown Sunday
 

QF have just cancelled today's ZQN flights sighting bad weather!!

Yes we had a lot of snow overnight BUT the runways, taxyways and aprons are clear of snow. It's just a bit wet, de icing is available but not needed.
Rwy 23 in use and the weather is good with light winds and excellent vis.
ANZ operating as normal today with maybe slight delays.

So what's the real reason QF cancel? Short of aircraft with JQ machines grounded?

Won't even get a mention on the news now gillard and co. are rabbiting on.

I see AirNZ flights from Sydney and Brisbane also cancelled.

Just saw an ANZ 737 depart off RWY 23. Raining here in the town, no contamination at his level now. Cloud base about 1500' and vis 5 km+ over Queenstown city, better toward the field.
Anyone know the landing minima for the RNP?

I guess if you "sight" bad weather, you probably shouldn't fly into it.

Flew in from Vancouver on Sunday morning to discover that Air NZ also cancelled flights to Queenstown.

Had to overnight in Auckland at the airline's expense.

The new Novotel near the international terminal is very nice but I really just wanted to get home.

On Track, that sucks that you couldn't get home, but it really is out of Bill's hands under these circumstances. The Volcanic ish is the volcanic ish, ewe's guys need to be safe when travelling around the land of the long haired lamb.

SYD-ZQN is operatered by QF Mainline not Jet Connect

Ero-plano, my flight AKL-ZQN was cancelled "because of weather" -- volcanic ash had nothing to do with it.

When I arrived the next day it didn't appear there'd been much of a snowfall at all -- not as much as the day after I arrived -- but I don't know what the cloud base and visibility were like on Sunday.

Bit of a nothing thread really.
Two carriers , both with a fair bit of experience decided not to go in based on weather forecasts and then that night the snowfall was significant enough to make the papers.
Is the point of the thread that the weather seemed good enough to operate to a 206 pilot based in NZQN?

If you want to avoid NZAA why don't you choose an alternative route. If you don't like AirNZ why don't you choose an alternative airline. It's called consumer choice.

Better still make a compliant with the airline in question, I am pretty sure their customer service people don't use Pprune as a platform to deal with customer complaints.

This is a bit of a nothing thread, you're correct there!!

I was there and was amazed that all QF and 2 ANZ flights were canceled, the weather was quite good most of Sunday up to about 1500 when rain moved back in BUT the vis was over 5 km's and the base at least 1500', enough to allow ops and indeed ANZ did fly during the day with 737's and A320's and an ATR 72.

If this is bad weather then we'd better send an email to our European and Canadian friends that routinely fly in this kind of terrain and weather without problems. Sure it may have been close to the minima but isn't that why alternates are carried?? NZCH is only 30 mins away and the weather there was ok.

At the end of the day I was amazed QF canceled, I was at the airport plane spotting ( as you do on holidays, its a beautiful place and makes for some good photos!! ) and the weather actuals were quite good. Snow on the ground, all movement areas clear ( but wet ) the sun was shining with light winds and scattered Sc.

They should have at least flown down and had a look.

My point on the day was, are QF using the forecast weather as an excuse? short of Aircraft due JQ grounding? looking for excuses to cancel QF intl ops?
