Photo identification will need to be produced by domestic passengers before they board flights as part of a major overhaul of airport security.

The recommendation is part of a parliamentary joint committee on law enforcement into the failure of security measures to combat organised crime in the aviation and maritime sectors, Fairfax has reported.

The report, to be released on Thursday, is expected to recommend that people who can't provide photo ID produce a signed statutory declaration confirming their identity before boarding.

It found the e-ticketing process introduces vulnerabilities into the system and is expected to call for more sniffer dogs at airports and raise the prospect of "passenger profiling".

It's expected to provoke a strong reaction from some unions over breaches of civil liberties and from airlines concerned the recommendations will cause major delays at boarding gates, Fairfax said on Thursday.
Qantas has reportedly argued against the mandatory use of photo ID, saying the elderly, infants and people who don't have a driver's licence might not be able to meet requirements.

Many moons ago a large group of us went down to Tasmania for a weekend, myself flying an old Archer with 3 others, another 4 or 5 flying down and back Tiger. One who was supposed to be flying Tiger for the weekend couldn't make it.
Anyway, as is prone to happen under the VFR, I got stuck down there for a LOT longer than I was hoping. One of my passengers needed to get back to the mainland ASAP, printed off the unused web check-in for Tiger and never had to show any form of ID.

they have been doing this in US for 10 years since 9/11.
You show a govt issued pic ID,ie DL, passport, mil ID, airline ID,(or herein aust ASIC), pilot licence with pic on another id too if pic not on licence, state govt ID card if you have none of the others with your boarding pass or eticket before u head upstairs to security screening or at screening while enetering the screening area. It doesnt hold up anything at all.
At least then the person flying matches whose name i s on the ticket.:ok:
No BS excuses from the PC crowd. should have been done here since 9/11 too. Oh and to cut wait times at security the only people allowed thru securtiy into the secure dep gate areas are people flying NOT friends and relatives.
This needs to be done here in Aust too.
Works in USA who have vastly huge pax numbers compared to Aust.

I've got no problem with it. It used to be the rule back in the days of proper check-in, so what's the difference? You need to produce photo id to hire a car.

So you fly to Surfers for the weekend and lose your wallet?

Have used someone else's ticket myself for convenience rather than illegality. That is the nub of the argument as far as I am concerned. What possible security "enhancement" is gained by this measure? If enough people object by insisting they sign the stat dec this might all just go away....

Where does the paranoia end?

Passenger ID requirement does nothing to enhance safety, are these pathetic government agencies going to require the IDs on trains,busses, taxis charter flights etc. next?
This response is exactly what the terrorist want, they sit back and watch us all continuously looking over our shoulders expecting to be attacked while our government feeds the fear reacting with costly, disruptive "solutions" to problems that don't exist.

Sorry, tell me again what government issued ID an eight year old has?

The US check is only face & name on ID against ticket name. That doesn't enhance security. IDs can be forged easily. Aviation insecurity** paranoia is a WOFTAM of monumental proportions.
