The "up or out" system is one where after a set number of years each employee is either promoted to a higher level or leaves the job.

It is used by a few companies to maintain the average age of its workforce at a constant level, or a part of its workforce constant. It also allows people to receive meaningful salary increases between levels while keeping the total wages bill constant.

If it was used in a Cabin Crew setting, it would mean that there would always be quite a few "bright young things" (Aka eye candy) in the crew with older people in the supervisory roles.

I'm not talking about political correctness here, but it does solve the perceived problem of "bitter twisted old boilers" because bitter twisted inept and old people don't make it to higher ranks.

MckInseys the management consulting firm use this process and every Two years the decision is made for every consultant to either promote, or fire. You do NOT get to sit in the same grade for more than Two years.

It works for McKinseys because:

1. Everyone agrees to it in advance of being hired.

2. It is a tremendous career booster to have worked for McKinseys, even for just Two years. They select from only the top MBA guys from the best MBA schools in the world. I made it through Four interviews before I got scrubbed, I didn't have the "Unique selling proposition" you need to get in, for example being a former concert pianist before you did your MBA or worked on a fishing trawler to finance your MBA, etc. They load your resume with this stuff.

3. McKinseys treat their former staff as "Alumni', they still network with them and many get jobs with McKinseys clients.

4. They pay very well.

I'm not sure how this would translate into a CC system but it's worth thinking about. Perhaps instead of "out" you could go to a ground position. There was a time when marketing was always done by former CC.

Sunfish,
It's simple, the board have no answers to the problems they have created. They have no answers as to why the Qantas group international passenger share continues to slide. Their only option is to blame the employees that have and would like to remain here for the long haul. (pardon the pun)
Dixon always said it was all about the shareholder. Well under his grand scheme the shareholder is reaping the benefits, NOT.
Joyce continues to say that employees need to be more efficient. Joyce has had ample time to explain to all employee groups where the inefficiencies are, but he uses this language to disguise the fact that he and his management team have no idea on how to reform the workplace with employee participation. Their grand plan of continual cost cutting is approaching the end. They have effectively ring barked Qantas and have no where else to go.

Sunfish, a very diplomatic approach.

Consider an "Up or Out" system for employing Cabin crew if you must give the cabin that youthful look
Now for the Cactus version - -
Not allowed;
- No female cabin crew over age 45 allowed
- No celleulite allowed
- Nobody over 50 kgs allowed (80% must be pushing 100kg I reckon)
- None of those post menopause moustaches allowed
- No varicose veins allowed
- No 'crows feet' and stringy grey hair allowed
- No 'tuckshop lady' arms allowed
- Nobody larger than a size 6
- No yellow smokers fingers and 'tuna breath' allowed
- No floppy as#es allowed
- No cheap Kmart perfume allowed to be worn
- Nobody old enough to wear dentures or who has incontenence allowed

That about covers it :ok:

CJ.
that's all well and good for the Board and managers but what about the ancillarry staff such as pilots engineers and CC.
