QF1820 (B717) turnback to YPPH

Took off 012140z (5:40am) local. Reports say left engine went bang. Turned around and returned safely to Perth.

I'd do the same thing if it was me.

Forget it!

Big deal! Don't make an issue of engine failures unless there is some unusual repercussions. It is just food for press vultures. If you have a large diverse fleet, you will have the occaissional failure. Same applies to everything from light bulbs to airconditioning.

Oh my god, hold the presses, headline to read

Aircraft lands safely.

There are plenty of reasons why turnbacks should be ignored by the press. A bang and shutdown in a twin is not one of them. Modern engines are supposed to be better than that.

Given the lack of "we're all gunna die" press, the situation seems to have been well-handled by the crew.
