Radiation Warning
Aviation body issues radiation warning
AVIATION regulators in London have issued a formal warning over the possible radioactive hazard from Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant. London Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC), the world's focal point for notifying the aviation industry of International Atomic Energy Agency warnings on the release of radioactive material, issued a message covering 10 regions. The open-ended warning, issued at 2pm AEDT on Wednesday, applies to airspace zones in Japan, Russia, China, the United States and South Korea. VAAC came to prominence last year when it was at the centre of coordinating the response to the Iceland ash crisis. Most carriers are still flying to Tokyo, but German airline Lufthansa Tuesday diverted flights from the capital to other Japanese airports. I'm curious, If a plane gets contaminated by radioactive dust or fallout, what will happen to them?
Will they get written off and destroyed? Will it still be covered by insurers? |
Now that you've asked......
What is the effect - if any - on the crew and pax...especially the crew as they may experience the particular hazard MORE than once..?? Not too sure I'd wanna be there.... Cheers:ok: |
Radiation Fallout
How long does an a/c fuselage stay 'contaminated' for?
What is the worst case scenario for those travelling in it? What is the worst case scenario for those working on it? |
God bless the Coriolis Effect..
|
VAAC came to prominence last year when it was at the centre of coordinating the response to the Iceland ash crisis. |
So....The persons inside the al. frame are subjected to volcanic ash...
No 'contamination' as such...the guys up at the pointy end would soon descend out of the plume 'lest the 'noise' stop..... But, unless the 'noise' does stop - then nobody dies. Then the persons inside the al. frame are subjected to 'Shudder'...Radio Active Contamination...and they are breathing the filthy stuff, and the Al. airframe is affected.... To What extent..?? I wonder..?? I understand the time of exposure and the degree / strength of contamination is the key issue...but... Will you still be able to have 'normal' grandkids..?? I wonder..?? OVAH!! :ok: |
I have been following the situation with interest from the IAEA. It appears the amount of radiation released so far is about the same as what a normal airliner receives over a year in normal operation.
The amount of radiation the workers are allowed to be exposed to in normal operations is about half what an average flight crew member will receive in a year flying long haul. In an emergency they will received slightly more than what flight crew will receive. But surprisingly Banana farmers will receive the most radiation of anyone. |
FACTS - Radiation Measurements in Japan
Enough of the media rubbish.... what is the truth??
List of measuring locations in Japan: Environmental Radioavtivity Measurement Result Table of measurements at these locations each hour: http://eq.wide.ad.jp/files/110317rad...y_1900rev2.pdf So for Chiba (City nearest Narita Airport): 0.04 microsieverts per hour x 24 hours per day x 365 days per year = 350.4 which is lower than normal annual exposure in the table at: Radiation Exposure in Daily Life Not to say that the situation could not change without warning though I most sincerely hope that does not happen since a mate of mine is right now in Narita Tower. But a little consideration of these figures indicates just how much the situation has been blown out of all proportion by the media. Put it another way: The best of new airport x-ray machines will give you a 5 microsievert dose of radiation - equivalent to about 120 hours of exposure at Narita / Tokyo Airport at present. Or your return flight from Narita to New York which will give you about 200 microsieverts of exposure is equivalent to around 5000 - YEP FIVE THOUSAND HOURS of sitting out in the open air at Narita. So if Aviation Professionals make RATIONAL judgements what basis is there for the current "FLEE" mentality? Or the FLEA mentality of a certain OZ politician? Offered for the consideration of rational people. |
Japan Nuclear Reactor #4 Completely Breached, In Full Meltdown.
Top US officials have testified before congress today that situation in Japan has a reached a catastrophe of proportions on par with Chernobyl. Both the Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Gregory B. Jaczko, the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave dire testimony before the The House Energy and Commerce committee. At this point both the primary and secondary containment vessels at the Fukushima nuclear reactor #4 are breached. To make matters worse radiation readings taken by the US indicate that the cooling pond is empty indicating the fuel rods are in a state of complete meltdown with no cooling to counteract the meltdown in progress. The latest reports out of Japan are that plant operations have been once again suspended due to the extremely high lethal levels of radiation coming out of the plant. Helicopters that were dumping water and boric acid onto the plant from the air have been called off as well. The news comes on the heels that the US has issued a 50 mile evacuation zone around the plant. Source:House Panel Questions Nuclear Regulatory and Energy Chiefs - NYTimes.com |
I'm curious, If a plane gets contaminated by radioactive dust or fallout, what will happen to them? In the case of Chernobyl the aircraft that were used in that vicinity have been discarded in a field along with vehicles. Chernobyl still experiences background radiation far greater than that of the norm. |

The Japanese and U.S. governments are giving different advice. The spoken words of Mr Gregory Jaczko Head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are available from CNN at:

A culture of fear. Let us not all lose the plot! :hmm:
|
be very cautious about believing what 'public officials' say. They are notorius for undermining the 'truth'.
Ask yourself why the American naval vessel moved to well over 100km away from japan when the explosions happened. Is it because its good for your health? NO! so to say that its normal levels is very concerning. You will not get a brass razoo when you get cancer a few years down the track! Its called Plausible Deniability. Great for getting big business and government off scott free, while you suffer. Just like fluoride in the water, hey its safe, that's why Hitler used it in the concentration camps! |
If anyone is interested this is a bloody good read and may open your eyes a little :ok:
BraveNewClimate also to add there is a better explanation of the day to day happenings of the nuclear situation in japan with a in depth explanation and not some journalism crap :ugh: you can see this by clicking the day on the left hand side of the page |

Please stop posting furphies! A good source of facts is the IAEA website The Brave New Climate site mentioned has been somewhat discredited given events since that article was written; however, is does go a long way to putting the Daiichi situation into perspective WRT to Chernobyl. That was an unadulterated c@ckup and to compare the Japanese situation to that is just plain mischievous. |
Really quite disingenuous Bloggs.
Please take a look another look at your first post when you took exception to: ·At this point both the primary and secondary containment vessels at the Fukushima nuclear reactor #4 are breached. When it was then clarified for you that the words above are what the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner actually said, you then double back on your original allegation to refute the Bloomberg headline. ·Japan Nuclear Reactor #4 Completely Breached, In Full Meltdown. Had you taken some time to research things, you would know that Wikipedia defines Nuclear Meltdown as ·An informal term for a severe nuclear reactor accident that results in core damage from overheating. The term is not officially defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency[1] or by the U.S.Nuclear Regulatory Commission.[2] However, it has been defined to mean the accidental melting of the core of a nuclear reactor,[3] and is in common usage a reference to the core's either complete or partial collapse. Your ham fisted attempt to refute what has occurred by attacking the credibility of the poster and not questioning the facts is disappointing but expected. Are you a 'professional' paid to hose down publically reported concerns, or do you just like to personally affront people for the hell of it? I have no issue with how it was reported, but If you want to take issue with CNN and Bloomberg, go for it. Hopefully those who read this forum have gathered that all is probably not what it seems and are doing some research before making up their mind. |
GlobalMaster,
I had the decency to listen to your CCN link. How about you have the decency to read the IAEA link I gave and then report back on the status of the No 4 reactor? Since you're quoting Wiki, you might also like to have a look at this page. |
Must say Boggy, have listened twice now to the CNN link provided by his masters voice and didn’t hear the Commissioner say that the number 4 reactor was empty. What I heard him say is:
Number 4 was shut down at the time of the earthquake and there is no water in the spent fuel pool. |
