Qantas CEO called a "Bomb Maker"

Federal MP Bill Heffernan has labelled Qantas CEO Joyce as "coming from a long line of Irish bomb makers" during a Senate enquiry. I guess plenty of Qantas employee's would agree. :)

Heffernan calls Qantas chief a 'bomb maker' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Capt_SNAFU 25th Feb 2011 02:51

I think it was a pretty bad scene much and all as I'm not a huge fan of AJ. Highly inappropriate.

Artificial Horizon 25th Feb 2011 03:03

Just shows the senator to be a totally ignorant pri*k. I am no fan of AJ, but after having lived in Ireland, to label them all 'bomb makers' is highly inappropriate.:ugh:

ampclamp 25th Feb 2011 03:19

I suspect Heffernan was trying to get under his skin and rattle him a bit for the hearing but he went about it the wrong way.
Some of the things this man comes out with are way out of line.
Joyce did well to laugh it off but he must have been angry and insulted to say the least.

These chat boards at times do exactly the same thing with vilification of Joyce because of his heritage. It is below the belt and not necessary.By all means be critical of his policies but playing the man because he is Irish or short is not right.

Skynews 25th Feb 2011 03:29

I haven't had the opportunity to read or hear it first hand, however, as a metaphor Joyce has lit the QF bombs wick!!

Oriana 25th Feb 2011 03:37

That was no metaphor - it was insulting, and inappropriate - regardless of whether you are a fan of AJ or not.:=

Ken Borough 25th Feb 2011 03:51

Heffernan :E:E has form. Nasty form. Remmber the way he villified Justice Michael Kirby? His attack on Alan is totally inappropriate and an insult not only to Alan but also to our wonderful Irish friends. Alan's gracious response speaks wonders of his character.

It's of little use writing to Heffernan to register ones's complaint or is it worthwhile writing to Abbott (now, he's a real "bomb-thrower"!!). I suggest if anyone is so inclined that one writes to one's local Liberal/NP member or Senator, condemn Heffernan's obnoxious behaviour and ask that they try to clean up their act by getting rid of the silly old bigotted git. Now that Tuckey has departed the scene, it didn't take long before another silly old uncle took the podium.:mad::mad:

Heffernan (and his mate McGauran) demonstrate just about every Senates Estimates what they are all about. It is a sad indictment of Australian politics that people of their calibre attain the positions they do.

Such a comment in most workplaces these days would result in some form of disciplinary action, at least,

denabol 25th Feb 2011 04:13

McGauran just got the CASA bloke to stick the knife into Qantaslink over a series of 15 stick shaker incidents on Qantaslink turbo props and also join the nervous bloke from the ATSB in sticking it up Jetstar for changing the procedures on its A320s before it caused one of them to fly to low when it was trying to do a TOGA at Melbourne.

WynSock 25th Feb 2011 04:31

Stick the knife?
I think the senator was asking CASA "were the stick shaker incidents related to experience levels of FOs, was there an increase in these incidents with a corresponding decrease in the experience levels of the FOs. Were these pilots not quite ready for this equipment?" or words to that effect.

The Green Goblin 25th Feb 2011 04:43

Just goes to show that we are still civil after all.

I'm disgusted at the comments regarding Alan. While his actions as a CEO are inept, irresponsible, misguided and dangerous to the employees, it is just business. He is trying to do the best for his career, and us for ours.

We have more invested in the outcome of this than him, after all, we will spend our career in this game. He will go on to a totally unrelated industry.

Play the ball, not the man. Shame on you senator.

Short_Circuit 25th Feb 2011 05:19

I thought they were referring to the paddle pop stick shaking in the F/D door locks of the dash 8. :E doh!

Mud Skipper 25th Feb 2011 05:33

GG

it is just business
What a cop out. AJ and his like have taken years out of the average mainline pilots career and cost us hundreds of thousands inlost wages while we sit around on reduced wages as others are employed in an egotistical experiment called Jetstar.
This was made personal by AJ first, by attacking our career he attacks our families and dependants. His attitude to pilots can be summized by his reference to the ex Ansett CP as only good for mowing lawn if not flying, CNBC ASIA interview a while back. Lets just hope he has a chance to reflect on his attitude on the way back Dublin when he's sent packing by the end of the year.:\

We must get rid of the third  before it culls any more roos.

1a sound asleep 25th Feb 2011 06:13

Sack him

Seriously if you were seriously f%^&ing up your job you would get sacked. About time a petition was started to be signed by shareholders, staff and the public. I reckon you'd get a million signatures.

He has to go

QAN_Shareholder 25th Feb 2011 06:22

G Goblin,

"While his actions as a CEO are inept, irresponsible, misguided"

Could you elaborate? I watch fairly closely, but with the handicap of being external to Qantas, and I just don't see it. What significant mistakes do you think he has made as CEO? I read a lot of negative comments based upon career paths / employment conditions being threatened but the villain is perhaps globalisation rather than Joyce.

Qantas 787 25th Feb 2011 07:19

Heffernan is an embarassment - regardless of what you think of Joyce, to comment on his heritage and the people of Ireland in general is pathetic and low. He must want the attention.

balance 25th Feb 2011 07:28

Personally, I dont care about Bill Heffernan. He makes silly comments. So does Phil the Greek, Julia Gillard, and every other public figure. So does everyone else. Its like masturbating, 99.9% of people do it. The other 0.1% lie.

So what? Everyone stop being so politically correct. It really ****s me. It has gone too far. I'm not saying that Heffernans comments were right or warranted. But I am saying stop this I'm holier than thou crap.

My problem is with Alan Joyce himself. He is a contemptible human being. His actions lately disgust me, just as much as his predecessor. My guess is that Silly Billy H has formed the same opinion.

gobbledock 25th Feb 2011 08:50

The scary thing in all this is that a pair of out of touch idiot CEO's have gone up against an obviously equaly out of touch total knob of a politician. This is laughable at best, downright scary at worst.
'Australia's greatest ass clowns all congregated together in one room' !
Who do the hell do these CEO's think they are, spewing forth such utter ****e ? Who the hell does this Politician think he is spewing forth equaly noxious ****e ?
Bring in the clowns, bring in the dancing girls because that is all that is missing from this taxpayer funded joke.......

ampclamp 25th Feb 2011 08:57

Heffernan insulted anyone of Irish heritage balance.

If some pr!ck called me a bomb maker or from a long line of bombmakers I'd break his F'ing jaw. How's that politically incorrect ?

I don't like what AJ is doing either It has SFA to do with his race.

Sunfish 25th Feb 2011 09:50

Ampy, what you do not understand is what is called "The litigation privilege".

If I am on trial for murder, and you are a supposed witness, in my defence I can allege that you f***k little boys without you being able to sue me for defamation.

All Heffernan did was take advantage of that same legal provision, albeit in a not very nice way, unless of course there is some basis in fact for what he said - which we do not know.

A Senate hearing is not a court of law.
