Qantas Boeing 767 engine problem & "emergency" landing

Apologies .. but I guess it's topical at the moment ...

from 'The West Australian' November 12 6.30pm

A Qantas jet carrying 234 passengers was forced to return to Perth today after its crew detected severe vibrations in an engine.
The Boeing 767 was ascending just minutes after take-off when the captain declared an emergency, contacted air traffic control and requested permission to return to Perth.
The plane, which was bound for Melbourne, landed safely.

Qantas booked passengers on other flights but a spokesman said they could be delayed by up to five hours.
Engineers are examining the plane tonight.

Avitor 12th Nov 2010 10:40

Qantas again! I type from a neutral position however, have other airlines had similar engine problems of late?

Whittle 12th Nov 2010 11:16

Evening take-off - could have been a bird strike I suppose - we'll see

Keg 12th Nov 2010 11:37

Avitor, any carrier with a fleet the size of Qantas is having these sorts of failures from time to time. Some years ago the in flight shutdown rate for QF was significantly less than the world average. Perhaps it still is. At the moment the microscope is on QF so you're hearing about them more than perhaps you did in the past.

I see your point, Keg and thank you for your observations.

Boston 12th Nov 2010 14:35

A380..
B747..
B767..

..Well done crew.. put that in the news!

SKS777FLYER 12th Nov 2010 17:26

Why is this news? Because the world press is interested in jet engines the past week or so and distraction from world financial shenanigans is desired at the moment.

QF 767 Engine Failure departing YPPH

A QF 767 returned to Perth following "some vibration" in the #1 engine.

Qantas plane forced to turn back to Perth

No big deal except for the media, and maybe the pax.

Brutus 12th Nov 2010 20:18

lol, thanks.

topend3 12th Nov 2010 23:07

:rolleyes:A disgraceful effort by the media to sensationalise a routine turnback. Channel 9 even did a "live cross" to Perth Airport...what a crock...

that chinese fella 13th Nov 2010 00:34

Is the aircraft back on-line, so sight of VH-OGW at YPPH this morning?

Bullethead 13th Nov 2010 00:43

There is a good reason you won't see VH-OGW in QANTAS colours anywhere soon and it's because this is it.

Yep, for once I agree with AJ, video here... Video - Qantas boss defends safety record - The Sydney Morning Herald

Speaks well of the pilots....:D the way it always should be.

Short_Circuit 13th Nov 2010 04:51

OMG I agree with AJ on this one, better go and have a bex.

blueloo 13th Nov 2010 05:22

It was a fair bit worse than vibrations. Bits of metal out the back, and now waiting an engine change.
