Qantas Boeing 767 engine problem & "emergency" landing
 

Apologies .. but I guess it's topical at the moment ...

A Qantas jet carrying 234 passengers was forced to return to Perth today after its crew detected severe vibrations in an engine.
The Boeing 767 was ascending just minutes after take-off when the captain declared an emergency, contacted air traffic control and requested permission to return to Perth.
The plane, which was bound for Melbourne, landed safely.


Qantas booked passengers on other flights but a spokesman said they could be delayed by up to five hours.
Engineers are examining the plane tonight.

Qantas again! I type from a neutral position however, have other airlines had similar engine problems of late?

Avitor, any carrier with a fleet the size of Qantas is having these sorts of failures from time to time. Some years ago the in flight shutdown rate for QF was significantly less than the world average. Perhaps it still is. At the moment the microscope is on QF so you're hearing about them more than perhaps you did in the past.

Why is this news? Because the world press is interested in jet engines the past week or so and distraction from world financial shenanigans is desired at the moment.

Is the aircraft back on-line, so sight of VH-OGW at YPPH this morning?

There is a good reason you won't see VH-OGW in QANTAS colours anywhere soon and it's because this is it.

It was a fair bit worse than vibrations. Bits of metal out the back, and now waiting an engine change.
