Kiwi B777 pilot missing in HKG reported by NZ Herald

Air NZ pilot missing in Hong Kong

More than 50 emergency workers, tracker dogs and a helicopter have been searching for an Air NZ pilot who went missing on a tramp in Hong Kong. More

I wonder why do pilots have to go on such " adventures " while on a layover. A macho thing? I certainly hope for the best in this case but I am sometimes amazed at pilots going into bungy jumping, alpine skiing, etc at layovers. Well, they certainly will have wild and interesting tales to tell in the crew lounges of their exploits but please do so on their yearly vacations.

This story has an eerie familiarity - 12 years ago I was on an extended layover in HK and an executive of the Pernod Ricard co. went missing in the Castle Peak area. As part of a volunteer group, including teams of Gurkhas, we searched the area for 3 days.

Nowt.

Tough meeting the guy's mother & toddler on top of the peak with nothing found.

Speaking purely as a non-Kiwi, I'm guessing "tramping" actually means "hiking"....

remoak 6th Aug 2010 02:33

No, it means tramping. Hiking is that girly thing you do in your designer boots, wearing your designer backpack with that thousand dollar goretex thingy on your bod. Tramping is what men do... :p:}:D

It's suprising how many people do go missing in HK each year while out hiking. You'd assume HK is a crowded metropolis, but it does have a lot of country parks and I can be on a trail only two minutes from leaving my house and not see anyone for a whole day!

So, how often does Mrs Winterland send you tramping ?
