Budget airline to charge to use the loo

ONE of Europe's biggest discount airlines, Ryanair, will charge passengers to use on-board toilets.

The Irish airline is planning to make its toilets coin-operated, forcing passengers to fork out STG1 ($1.65) or E1 ($1.44) every time they want to spend a penny in the sky.

The extra charges, which come on top of separate fees for check-in baggage and snacks, will coincide with the reduction of some toilet facilities on Ryanair planes.

"By charging for the toilets we are hoping to change passenger behaviour so that they use the bathroom before or after the flight," Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara told the Daily Mail.

"That will enable us to remove two out of three of the toilets amd make way for at least six extra seats."

The news came as the carrier came under fire for hiking fees for check-in baggage by 33 per cent to STG20 ($33) per bag.

Rochelle Turner, head of research for British consumer magazine Which? Holiday, said Ryanair was penalising families going on holiday.

"Flying with Ryanair is not always as cheap as it first appears and we would advise passengers to factor in these extra costs when choosing who to fly with this summer," she said.

Ryanair is a joke. I wouldn't even consider flying with them.

Hey - great marketing and revenue opportunity.

The new breed of SLF that normally sat at home sticking a bread knife through a Corn Flakes box cos it makes a cool noise can now afford to fly.

They are basically full of crap, so why not make them pay to lose themselves on the way to their holiday?

All of my Ryanair clients to date do however agree that the Airline is as much fun as pulling hair out of you nose. Not one good report.

What was the base plan for JQ based on? I feel to be fair that they have moved a little beyond that though.

Best all

I hope all the airport authorities start charging ryanair increased fees for the resultant increased airport toilet usage by their passengers.

Ah Crap EWL!
As a kid I loved sticking a knife into the Corn Flakes packet for the cool noise it made.
Time to go and take a good, long, hard, look at myself. Now where did I leave that liquid Viagra and the eyedropper. :(

I flew with them a number of times a few years ago. I definitely believe that if you place a price on your own time, when you factor in the extra travel time and costs for getting to and from a remote airport, easyjet were generally better value.

This is a publicity stunt for reporters (and apparently some people here) who have no understanding of aviation. It is probably a joke announcement designed to distract the media from their REAL announcement (made at the same time) that they are increasing their baggage charges by 25% for the Summer holidays.

Ryanair operates a fleet consisting solely of 202 Boeing 737-800s. As you can see from the link: "The 737-400X became the 737-800 but is significantly longer at 39.4m (129ft 6in) and seats up to 189." They are currently operated in 189 seat configuration with 4 Flight Attendants.

To remove two of the three on board toilets, and replace them with 6 extra seats would require a fleet replacement, or re-certifying the 737-800 (which isn't going to happen.) :hmm:

I'd rather fly with a decent airline than a circus outfit.

This will bite them in the ass, literally ... it's not like the loo is only used for grown-ups to relieve themselves ... I've got two hyperactive toddlers and I'm damned if I'll pay 1 quid to change their nappy a couple times in flight, looks like it will be change sh!tty nappy on the seat beside me and smear poo all over the seats :ok: ... or some drunken / airsick type punter who hasn't got a coin so vomits all over the floor

Multiply that by half a dozen families per flight and we'll soon see whether the extra few quid per flight revenue makes it a sustainable policy
