An Indonesian commercial plane has slipped off the runway after landing at Tanah Merah Airport in Papua.

The plane reportedly lost control after a dog ran across the runway. Local police spokesman Nurhabri told Metro TV that the plane lost its grip (!) after landing and could not make a left turn.

No-one was injured in the incident.


Someone's drawing a long bow here in blaming the dog. Interesting outcome with the starboard engine. Also the passenger evacuation seems to have been done quickly.

I image "their" emergency evacuation provisions take no account for the provision of a turning propellor?

Love the fact that the passengers are carrying their hand luggage......but at least it was not the crew who were out first!!!!

Guess those prop blades would make some good canoe paddles?:ok:

The evacuation was delayed until the 28,000 blades of the right propeller had returned to earth!

I think the best bit was the RH hub and remaining blades taking off into the scrub as a 1500hp brush cutter ! LMAO!!!:}

Being Indo, I can just see some guy coming out of said scrub moaning that his house just run over by a giant black 6 legged spider!!!:ok:..... wondering where his bloody dog had taken off too!:E

It is obviously very expensive and dangerous to try and avoid dogs on the runway. Even a prop is replaceable. They were lucky to get out of that with no injuries. Airmanship seems to be lacking here. Assess the risk and stuff the dog!

At a guess - saw the dog, braked very heavily - still with directional control. Tyres look like they blew, then they lost directional control......

If you look closely at the video I think you're right , looks like the RHS is riding on the hubs

This is the second Dornier 328 crash in Irian in the last 8 months

They are owned by the same guy (an expat) but on lease to the operator , in the previous crash the pilot landed 3 metres short of the runway at Fak Fak and took the gear off a week after it had a full rebuild. PIC was a Philippino check and training captain in the previous accident.

I remember some time ago one of our A/C was landing in Dhaka (Bangladesh)
which like some of theses Asian airports has many dogs in the airport perimeter.
EK has a forward facing camera which passengers can watch the landing.
As the A/C landed a dog was seen hitting the nose gear. Obviously the dog came off second. After landing the purser called the flight deck after comments from the passengers. Her question was "how is the dog?"

Uumm, well he has a bad limp now???

During the Tsunami relief a 737 hit a water buffalo during landing and it tore the undercarriage out of one side of the aircraft.

Later I saw the engine that hit the ground (in the operators warehouse in Jakarta) and the sudden stop had twisted the whole engine case to the point that the engine had started to split.

Water buffalo ... not good.

Its been pretty funny to watch this really take off in the media and the forums around the place.

I've seen some reports where it was suggested they were landing in a strong crosswind and heavy rain :mad:.

Weather conditions were pretty damn good that day. Dogs and people near/on the runway is a rather common thing - there are no fences, even at the odd airport that has them there are usually massive gaps or sections missing. Thats the risk which is generally well managed by crews, in this case it wasn't a factor.

First-hand information suggests it was mechanical failure on landing and the braking was in response to that. Recorders were boosted out that afternoon and there should be an interim report on the KNKT (Indo NTSC) site reasonably soon.

Was sad though to see another one come to grief, they are a beautiful aeroplane. Fingers crossed after a thorough wing inspection, an engine replacement and some new tyres it should be flyable (no visible fuse damage). They could always put it on a barge down the river to get it to an easier place to work on.

Hope the new drug and alcohol testing isn't aimed square at you mate, I'm guessing you'll get a positive reading for sure :eek:

For a passenger aircraft I thought it was a bit of alright.
