Qantas to close maintenance base at Mildura

From the ABC news site . . .

Qantas will close its regional maintenance base at Mildura.

The company has been reviewing its operations because of climbing oil prices.

It has decided to retire six ageing Dash 8 aircraft it still has in service.

The planes are maintained by an engineering crew of 22 staff at Mildura.

Qantas says the maintenance base will closed in a month.

The company is offering staff transfers to other Qantaslink locations to minimise redundancies.

Qantaslink says it will maintain existing flight operations, cabin and ground crew bases in Melbourne and Mildura to look after its remaining Victorian, Tasmanian and Canberra services.

Qantas has also decided to stop flying the loss-making Melbourne to Wollongong route from next month.

The Newcastle to Melbourne, and Newcastle to Sydney services, will be permanently halted after being previously suspended.

However, Newcastle will continue to be served by Jetstar and Aeropelican.

gee poor buggers at MIA, great bunch of guys, offered me a place to rest on the odd occasion. I wonder what the guys will do with GD's photo they have on their lunch room wall? If they can get it off the wall without falling apart (due to zillions of dart holes in it) then am sure they can ceremoniously bury it!
Good luck guys with where ever you go:ok:

Notice to staff, of this development, via the QL electronic newsletter, has been conspicuously absent. Is this yet another example of QANTAS making a media statement before telling the staff? Deja Vous Adelaide!

MIA base has been there 'forever'.....

Wasn't QF advertising for engineers for mildura a month ago.I just hope anyone who accepted a position has not left another one to go up there.

Hi EP,
Not everything's as rosy as you seem to point out about redundencies. Remember, some of the Mildura folks may be long-term employees but not yet ready to retire. OK then, they get another job, but probably not in the aero maint. business in Au.

That means, very soon (max 2 years) their licenses expire. Now they're back to just 'tradesmen' from an industry that no longer recognizes Aircraft Maint. Engineering as a trade. That severly limits what sort of job they will be able to get, especially if they're over 50.

My advice for the Mildura crew is to get a transfer if they can, if not, take the money and start looking for work O/S: don't let your licenses lapse-not only are tricky to get back, but you need a job first to get them back. Not an easy thing to do in todays Australian industry.

Good luck to them all, no matter what they choose! :ok:

Qantas advertising for engineers 1 month ago

Does not surprise me that the company would do such a thing, a very similar thing happened with pilots with Australian Airlines in CNS.:=

Pilot slots were being handed out about a month or two before Qantas closed down the base. These poor buggers sold their homes, wives left their jobs to take up this posting just to be told shortly after... too bad, its closing.:{

I am so sorry to hear that Qantas has dished out some more innocent casualties.

My heart goes out to you.

Best of luck to you all and your families:ok:

A hell of a lot of people will never forget QF, a Co. now with little respect for it's employees:bored:
In a funny sought of way Qf have done you MIA engineers a favour, now you can go seek work with someone who might still care:ok:

I quote their "feelgood" post APA advertising campaign....

"All part of Qantas' committment to Regional Australia".:yuk:
