Qantas blocks PPrune access
 
It appears that Qantas has resticted access to PPrune on their internet, can anyone else confirm this?

A senior engineer was interviewed by QF security re his accessing of PPRUNE on the QF internet system. Yes BB or DC watch every move you make in other words do your accessing from elsewhere.

There are so many ways around it.

I.e Surf the web usinging a different IP simply run a search in google under free proxy servers and walah PRESTO!!!!!!!

Don't want to sound sanctimonious but what is so wrong with Qantas doing this, as claimed? You can be sure that many other employers have all kinds of limits on Internet use.

Having been a manager and supervisor, and employer, I can say from experience that Internet access is a great time waster. Most employees do not require Internet access to do their jobs and the tools are readily available for any employer to limit Internet access not only to those who genuinely need it but also to restrict access to sites that are required for an employee to do his or her job.

That's something I've wondered for a while now is that you are strictly not allowed to turn on your mobile phone in flight, but your laptop with its wireless network card can transmit away all it likes looking for a network when you boot it up to use it in flight.

When WiFi first came out, I asked the head of QF Flight Ops Technical whether it posed similar problems to mobile phones. His response was that WiFi signals are much lower in power than mobile phones and have been assessed as having no risks to aircraft. When you think about how short WiFi ranges are in comparison to mobile phone range then it makes sense.

I am not part of QANTAS so I wouldn't know if it is fact or not.

BUT!

Just have a look around you and check out how many people bite the hand that feeds them..... Never before have I seen so many employees go out of their way to sink the boots into their employer.

Any bl@@dy wonder they would cut access to some of the dribble that makes these boards.

By your own admission you are not with Qantas and I used to be however, your right that a lot of QF employees are not happy.

Now could it be that so many people are wrong,bitter and self absorbed or could it be that a few QF managers are wrong,bitter and self absorbed?

You would have to ask why the majority are disillusioned and unhappy.

From managements point of view you have to or should be asking yourself why are so many staff unhappy?

As far as your ludicrous statement in another post about QF's long standing safety record is concerned you have just shown your position.

QF's safety record is no myth and is worth defending against those who are more interested in a bonus.

How do you take note of gripes and issues written by a relatively small number of people, anonymously, and in a manner that is generally aggressive and intolerant of opposite views, and use the knowledge constructively?

Anonymity in a forum is a two edged sword. Geat because people express their view, but bad because people are able to abdicate responsibility for those same opinions which by definition fosters extremism. If this was a place where there was intelligent, considered debate instead of flames and criticism (how does slandering management help), then you would have a point. As an exercise, go through the recent threads on Qantas and delete those that abuse someone and see what's left.

As it is, pprune seems to be a venue for people to vent their disatisfaction at qantas, and that's about it. Perhaps that is the takeout for Qantas management.

(this is not a comment on those threads where there is an actual technical-type discussion, which appear more than beneficial albeit of little use to qantas management)

Ever worked in a company that has put out suggestions boxes Crank? Internet forums can be used in the same way. Judging by your pre conceived idea that Pprune is just an avenue for "flames and criticism", you probably wouldn't be able to sort out what could be used constructively anyway.

Yes, there certainly are many here that like to post rubbish and have an axe to grind but, I for one have had my pre conceived ideas changed by other posters and their opinions. Very early on, I had a "run in" with someone who was very passionate about a subject and, after the "handbags at 40 paces" were done with, I actually learned a great deal & now get on quite well with that individual. Get past the vitriol & actually think about some of the things you are reading

Anyway, I guess you'd be a perfect candidate for airline management in Oz if you cant.

Contrary to your suggestion I had no pre-conceived notion, simply formed a view after reading many of the threads. Yes I've worked in companies with suggestion boxes, and have even been responsible for commissioning anonymous staff surveys. These are very beneficial, but also fundamentally different from this site.

Yes there is some material here that's interesting and could be beneficial. My point is more that it seems an unhelpful use of time to consider it likely that management will troll through these forums to discover the odd pearl of wisdom. Conduct the exercise iI mentioned, deleting these types of abuse from the threads, and yes you are probably right there is some valid feedback here.

....as opposed to managers treating employees like dogs or scum? You think people feel this way about managment for the sake of it?

Just a small point. A Pilot in charge of a multi crewed aircraft is a Manager... just as much as the person in charge of flight operations or ramp agents or the ticket office!!
