Read some comments elsewhere, by a well known PPRuNE'er and that was would HNL have been a nearest suitable airport.

Someone else commented not many sheep there = not suitable:uhoh:

After being stuck for nine hours on a flight to nowhere, the prospect of being offloaded in Hamilton would be more than most humans could bear.

Crew called by Maintenance Watch and informed that Rolls Royce (engine owners) wanted an engine change, due to high engine vib, so back to AKL it was.

Not likely; ANZ 777s have RB211 Trent 895-17 engines fitted.

I stand corrected

Yay, I'm not as spottery as I thought I was!

Would be interested to know if AirNZ has FOQUA....in short ,MTX are they able to monitor the A/C in flight??

For those that are familiar,as soon as you touch something ...they know....
The VIB readings must have been high enough for a return as most checklists will either call for a
(1) reduce power settings for cruise flight
(2)crew monitor
(3) complete shutdown

Have had several that require the"crew monitor"..never a shut down...cant rememder the VIB #,s in the boeing ...but in the Bus(A-321) anything over 5.0 calls for SERIOUS DISCUSION indeed...obviously a return to kiwi,if the info s correct, meant the problem wasnt too serious, but maybe cheaper to fix on home turf....when one of these engines is out of whack...you can certainly feel it....

Bottom line..they made it back safe :ok:
