Sydney Heavy Maint to Re-open H245

Rumor has it that Qantas have stuffed up with the closure of the facilitiy H245 last year,no slots anywhere in the world available for heavy checks and Avalon is a basket case, fleet is becoming unreliable, and passangers not happy with IFE shut down, etc, and CASA are starting to give Avalon a little too much attention

That would make Darth happy....:E

They are even slipping in 2 747-400 Super A checks into Brisbane Heavy Maintenance at the end of the month. So much for being a 767 Heavy maintenance facility.

NAS1801 16th Apr 2007 03:37

And where will they find the employees to staff the facility once more??? All those that left Qantas Heavy either moved on to other areas, or bitterly left Qantas without any good will. Qantas burnt their bridges with Sydney Heavy staff. They were never given an opportunity to "bid" for the outsourced (Avalon) work. I seriously doubt that any will want to return. As for Brisbane doing 747's, they managed the 737 well and there is a hell of a lot of 747 experience up there.

Word on the street is that Cox has the blow torch well and truly on him for the Line1 shut down decision. Let him worm his way out of that. It would appear that is is a sellers market at the moment with ZERO capacity world wide for wide body heavy maintenance, and Qantas has an empty hangar rotting in Sydney. I am no manager but surely there would have been some money to be made here.

I thought with the large manpower pool to be established in base maintenance after the sydney review that this flexible pool of labour could be used for h245 super A checks. this was cox's plan all along or am i giving him to much credit

The wonders of Karma! When QF comes crawling back on its knees asking you to return, remember you want full continuity of employment restored along with benefits, QF can pick up the tax penalties and you want a 20% payrise as well....

NAS1801,

The BNE guys did that 737 (VH-TJF) in 29 days. The same check with a fatter work package is expected to be processed through Melbourne in 12 days. Still a job well done by guys without a great deal of 737 experience however, lets not blow too much sunshine up their Kyber.

There are some ex AVV, ex SYD heavy blokes in BNE now with some decent 747 background but, a lot of the people they supervise will not. Also, probably won't have alot of 744 tooling available on hand in BNE. Watch what happens when they try to get it out of AVV.

D. COX et-al should be drawn and quatered for what they've done to the Heavy Maintenance capabilities of Qantas. The closure of SYD might have been O.K. if they were going to get fair dinkum about AVV but, they aren't. For a group of people who continually talk success and becoming a world class MRO, they sure seem to be doing their best to wreck the place.

The precinct review in Sydney will free up a bit of manpower, maybe as much as 50 people but that is now where near enough to do small heavy visits like "Super A" checks yet alone the D checks which are required in the next 24 months. Don't forget big M wants dedicated crews for the new fleets 380/787 so he has to find manpower. I doubt he will let his valuable manpower pull the clown whom closed heavy maint out of the sht.
You have creditted Cox way to much. IMHO its QF jumping on the outsourcing band wagan way to late.

all they have to do is train up some apprentices and they will be on their way to worlds best practice,no worries:ok:

Two scenarios:

1. APA-owned Qantas, to cut outgoings/raise funds to pay APA their obscene 'fee', decide to get out of the lease on the Sydney Jet Base. Guess what, Macquarie Bank - part of APA and the main owner of Sydney airport - sell the real estate and put up Meriton-style flats or an office park. So - no hope of a return of heavy maint to Sydney.

2. APA-owned Qantas, to cut outgoings/raise funds to pay APA their obscene 'fee', sub-let the Jet Base facilities to a either a start-up or subsidiary of an established MRO, who takes over the space and the people and starts charging QF commercial rates for heavy maint in what used to be their own hangars. That is, when they can fit them in around the non-QF business they're winning due to the exceptional quality of their work.

If we want 2. to be a possibility, surely there's some former QF heavy maint dudes out there who could put a business plan together and present it to some banks? Crikey, if they'll let APA have $$$ for what they want to do, they'll let someone with a proper business plan (ie. one which creates, rather than destroys, a business) borrow money!

Then again, these are the same people who lent money to Warwick Fairfax... :ugh:

Taildragger67, one has to move in rarified circles to be afforded finance of that type. Perhaps the same circles Dicko and The Dame circulate in.

Taildragger67 16th Apr 2007 13:54

Redstone,

Yes I'm sure Alan Moss doesn't answer the phone to just anyone with a well-thought-out business plan. Dealing with greasy things like engines probably isn't glamorous enough for the No. 1 Martin Place. :hmm:

Taildragger67, Bob Mansfield is the one I would be keeping an eye on. Seems his nick name would be "sex fingers" if he were on our crew...........
