In 2002 it was SARS! cost me, and many others our jobs (with hindsight it wasnt a bad thing) the SARS virus proved to be a media beatup with less than 100 total deaths !! compared to 1000's that die every day from the common cold and flu.
Now we have Avian Bird flu. total deaths so far - 60. yet all i read in the papers is global doom the end is neigh type crap.. oh, and this! Dixon must be rubbing his hands together with this one!! SARS: There were a total of 8,069 cases of disease and 775 deaths. The total is being reduced / reconsidered, with the Chinese media reporting that their categorisation may have been too broad after the initial under reporting. The initial impact on the travel and hospitality industries derived from fears generated by the lack of knowledge of its origins, causes and treatment, as well as its apparent highly contagious nature. Currently we have the most scared nation on earth (and the most powerful) digging in a quagmire in a pathethic country called Iraq, if that is not proof that fear works then I don't really know what is. For us in OZ, we calmly allowed refugees to be detained and interred (including children) for many years, because of what ? fear ? or uncertainty ? of selfhisness ? loss of our jobs (tho I'm really at pains to find how an illiterate afghan who can't speak can threaten my job). I'm going to Thailand soon for a holiday and have taken notice of all the bird flu articles.
After reading a lot of scaremongering in these articles I referred to the smarttraveller website and read that info. Basically it says to not handle or eat raw or not properly cooked chicken. Stay away from live bird markets and bird sh!t. Even after the latest articles about border closures the info on the smarttraveller website has not changed. Now I'm not one to take risks, but this does some to be blown out of proportion at this point in time. |

You cannot get birdflu from eating chicken, ducks etc. It is an airborne virus.

My girly is a vet student (just about to finish) and as you could imagine the Bird Flu is a hot topic. She says that the flu was transmitted to humans in Asia where people were raring cocks for cock fighting. Now these people were advised to suck the mucous from the bird nose and that would remove the illness from the cock and it would fight better, eg no longer suffer from lathergy associated with flu like symptoms. That is how close you need to be to contract it. So far it has been transmissable only from bird to human but if it mutates to go from human to human then things will most likely go pear shaped for people of the world and then probably the travel industry.
Some local council fool in Sydney suggested the only way to protect the public from the thousands of pidgeons was to round them up to make pies like they did back in the war. Idiots, the country is neing run by idiots. As for the Asio alert threat, it is all a matter of good timing for political gain, they all do it. Wonder what this nonsense is gonna do to QF recruitment. Bird flu scare, security scares and A380 delays? The guys that got in this last year could be the last for a while maybe? |

Is that a bad thing? as far as im concerned, anything that prevents a terror attack on Aussie soil is a good thing, even if that means the suspects will no longer carry out their threat and the feds have a blown operation? im sure the the cell under survelence will continue to be watched, and if they plan another attack later in the future, then im sure the feds will than have a case against them and take action I'm not saying you're wrong - I agree that it's better to have blown an operation rather than have any risk of it actually happen - but with the trust & respect level I have for our government (Children overboard, Stolen generation, the "never ever GST", WMD, DIMIA, IR, Aviation management.........) it's inevitable that I and a large part of the population must conclude that it's all a big 'wag the dog' stunt. Direct contact with infected poultry, or surfaces and objects contaminated by their faeces, is presently considered the main route of human infection. Is it safe to eat poultry and poultry products? Yes, though certain precautions should be followed in countries currently experiencing outbreaks. ... In areas experiencing outbreaks, poultry and poultry products can also be safely consumed provided these items are properly cooked and properly handled during food preparation. The H5N1 virus is sensitive to heat. Normal temperatures used for cooking (70oC in all parts of the food) will kill the virus. Consumers need to be sure that all parts of the poultry are fully cooked (no “pink” parts) and that eggs, too, are properly cooked (no “runny” yolks). |
