B717 Lemon?!
Boeing proposes 717 stretch
Dateline: Friday September 19, 2003 Having failed to generate launch interest in a shorter variant of the 717 targeting the regional jet market, Boeing now is proposing a stretch of the slow-selling jet providing seating for an additional 24 passengers in a typical two-class configuration. The 717-300X, which "has been offered to several airlines," would be available in the second half of 2006 and involves a 14 ft. stretch of the 717-200 airframe from 124 ft. to 138.3 ft., increasing seating from 106 to 130. The variant would have higher maximum takeoff and space-limited payload weights and a higher-thrust engine. Boeing also would add a service door behind the wing. In that size range, the dash 300X if launched, would compete against the 737-700 as well as the A319 but would resolve a dilemma for potential 717-200 customers--the lack of a growth variant. --PF |
Boeing seems to be doing a lot of "proposing" in recent years. Stretched 747s, 7E7s, sonic cruisers, etc.

Stretched B717
Sounds like it could be about the size of the MD90.
I'm driving the MD90 EFD (enhanced flight deck) which has the same DUs and FMSs as the 717 - MTOW 72.0 with 121 pax in 2 classes. Certainly a money maker...just hope they give it some ailerons..... WW |
Good to see constructive comments, as it wasn't put on to wind up the mob of 717 drivers here with Nopulse etc.
The MD 90 and 82 are operated through Asia and looks like the Middle East quite successfully. Just heard also that Boeing are losing orders through Europe, to Airbus, even with discount operators. Lets hope they can make this one a winner (717) |
My point Chocks Away is that Boeing has been doing lots of proposals lately, but very little else. Plans are prepared, but then the action doesn't seem to be there. I think many airlines are getting annoyed at this too.
|
Yeh, come to think of it you're right, they do have many proposals and variants of older types on the board.
Maybe searching desperately, with feelers out, for a true winner like they had in the Boeing 747 launch?. |
The proposed 717-300 is somewhere in length between a DC-9-50 and a MD80. I think (from memory) it was 4-5 meters shorter than the -80.
I personally can't see it happening. Would love to see it but they are beating a dead horse. I think the 717 is a perfect aircraft for many markets but just doesn't offer the same degree of FLEXIBILITY as the family aircraft like the 737 / 32X. Not to mention commonality benefits. Just my thoughts... |
Mile high
Here is the MD90 EFD we operate - we have 29 of em.Note the altitude - this is on ground !! Highest strip we go to is 7626 - higher than Kosiosko !!
Anybody guess where that is ?? oops - sorry no image !! I'll try again later |
Just heard also that Boeing are losing orders through Europe, to Airbus, even with discount operators.
Yep, here's one: EasyJet took delivery of its first CFM56-5B-powered A319. It is the first aircraft from a 120-unit order that the budget carrier placed at the end of last year (ATWOnline, Oct. 15). EasyJet will receive five A319s this year, all of which will be based with subsidiary easyJet Switzerland in Geneva. The remaining aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2007. :oh: |
The 717 is a win-win with Boeing.
MD did all the designing and planning and spent all the money that gets spent for a new a/c. If airlines want the aircraft, boeing builds them one from the plans, easy money. |
B717-200LR
Just Read on Airliners about a 717-200LR Variant
Seems like it'll have an extra tank (an additional 2,000+kg). They may encourage a few more -200 sales given that it won't be as range limited. the quoted 2060nm Design range keeps it up with the ERJ-190's. |
