Wasn’t there a quaintass incident in the 70s where the captain decided to ditch a 737? after the airfield went below limits and they had nowhere else to go but was saved by a dead heading crew member that persuaded the captain that landing below limits was a better option?
IIRC it was published in BEA horror comic so would have been first half of the decade.

Well no. Not at all. QF didn’t operate 737s until after the merger with TN in 1992. That story, true or not, involved a 767. Allegedly.

The incident apparently occurred in either the 80s, the 90s or the early 2000s.
I heard the aircraft involved was either a 767, 330 or a 747-300.
It was coming down from Asia or across from the East Coast, or even from Africa.
The aircraft was apparently going to ditch in the Swan River or off the beach.
But the widest variation is who supposedly told the flying pilots to auto land instead of ditch.
Either it was paxing pilot from a GA background who told two cadets not to ditch.
Or a military trained pilot who told two civilian trained pilots.
Or an Air Traffic Controller.
Or a Boeing pilot telling two Airbus pilots.
Or a paxing pilot from another airline (Ansett) telling the QF guys.
Or (insert background of pilot telling the myth) telling (background of pilots that person dislikes). I’m sure at some point in the future it’ll become two female pilots being told by a male……
But never any names or specific details. Stories in aviation get around quickly and almost always have a name attached. This one never did…….

Putting my neck into the noose…My information in those days was from company and Air Force horror comics and flight magazine read in WH Smiths as I couldn’t afford to subscribe.
Could have been a 727 or a turbo prop.
‘To recount the unbelievable to some;
as I second officer I decided to take control from an extremely intelligent captain but poor pilot after he told Sofia radar that he would fly through a large Cu Nim that was having rockets launched into it.
‘Steve would know the next three;
captain locks himself in the loo when Rome closes and comes out during approach into diversion when gear comes down.
Aircraft lands having burnt all the legal fuel. Captain never flies again because of action of a group of copilots according to a senior trainer on the fleet.
One of the moderators here with legal connections stated in a private chat there were moves to prosecute him.
707 has flameout taxiing in, big chief, never published.
From my own experience;
Captain briefing..we make all the standard calls but we do not go around regardless. (Low fuel).
Watched a proper monitored approach, hand flown manual throttle, on a cat 1 ils which wasn’t approved for coupled, decision height 200ft with continue phase and lights seen below 100ft from jump seat.
Scariest was in crew bunk having done at least 8 hours duty into Rio after we had decided to continue when we hit the South American coast; minimum diversion fuel to São Paulo. Forecast wrong and there had been two CFT due to poor radar control. Rough as old boots and on short finals a partial go around was executed with the crew forgetting the gear for several minutes. Committed to land in a thunderstorm as alternate fuel burnt.
Another time looked at the tanks getting onboard..less than final reserve at Homebase.
I won’t bore you with other “impossible cause I didn’t read about it” but it has happened and I’ve had a fair number of sweaty palms, taken control, foolishly not taken control and captain sacked; all on the QT.
For those of you who never operated second generation, low bypass, analogue instrumented and limited fuel capacity aircraft at a time when there wasn’t a large number of well equipped civil airfields you don’t know what you’ve missed or what fun we had especially with débutants.

A 727 taxying in at CBR with engines spooling down comes to mind

QANTAS didn't get B767s until 1985, so I call BS to the whole story.

There are some squiggly tracks around PER at the moment with some very taxing weather conditions and a power outage at the terminals.
But I certainly wouldn't recommend a water landing right now - 9M swell off the coast.
I can't imagine even Sully trying that one on.

Welcome to Perth Australia 3rd world country. The airport has no standby power or terminal generators due to power outage. Reports are there has been no light, no water in bathrooms, no PA announcements and no food or drinks to purchase with no EFT.
Only way of communicating seem to be by Facebook if you have a working mobile phone. All outbound flights are cancelled. Inbound flights with fuel requirements are being allowed to land. Reports are it has been like this since 2PM and no known restoration time. NO hotels - Chaos.
