Don’t know but Qantas Ground services just started advertising for baggage handlers / ground crew at Sydney Airport.
Its a totally owned subsidiary or Qantas and they are offering Staff travel benefits as one of the benefits of the job. Sounds like
they are trying to go back to in-house ground handling, in Sydney anyway.

Makes sense , use outside contractor to halve the pay , deal with legal issues , accept short term pain of sub standard service then bring it in house on similar terms but you get staff travel . Start all over again , collect bonus .

I don't know about that. If they continue to pay peanuts, they will continue to get monkeys.
And from what I hear, Qantas Staff Travel ain't the amazing benefit it once was.

Oh well, let's see how it goes. Surely it won't be any worse than it currently is. I'm sure QF have their best and brightest working on a plan.

yeah, I just saw that on Seek. Not indicated is how many months you have to endure on crap pay to get the bonus. The pool of people with no criminal record willing to work for crap money on split shifts in the rain isn’t as deep as they had hoped. Not that it doesn’t sound enticing.

Oh man! Where do I sign?

I can’t wait to:
“Enjoy the challenge of being physically active, working in all weathers”

I can’t wait to avoid a pesky reliable full time position. Luckily: “Multiple Permanent part-time opportunity based at Sydney Airport”

They also go on to with their hard sell…

“You’ll have –
  • Availability to work a 24 hour, 7 day a week rotating shift roster
  • Recent experience in a manual handling or physical role, within a fast paced operational environment
  • A passion for safety and working within OH&S guidelines at all times
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • A hard working nature and a positive ‘can do’ attitude
  • The ability to repetitively lift items up to 32 kgs in weight”

Could be to service the other airlines they have contracts with.
Swissport may have just worked out that what they thought was a great contract with QF is not so great after all. I would be pretty sure the little ex kiwi farmer who sits at the top & continually boasts about the millions they saved by outsourcing ground handling would be the same puppet that convinced swissport what a great deal they were getting.

So they are in damage control after the embarrassment of losing the court case?

Has it gone to high court yet? Qantas of course were trying another court & judge because as you know it is just not possible they could be in the wrong.

Good thing they’re still spending money on appealing the decision of illegally sacking their ground staff……

These jobs would be servicing QantasLink which QGS has done since it was started. Head office probably not too keen on trying to conjure up even more swissport workers.

Spot on, and they now handle the E190s on top. Turnover is high, so is the overtime bill.

Have heard from contacts that work at the airport that they are trying to get out of QF domestic. Struggling big time to have enough crew.

Yep. Problem with this is that people are leaving straight after they are paid the sign on bonus. They can't keep up with high turnover.

Looks like a Qantaslink baggage handler requirement for the Dash 8 or B717.
