CASA Digital Flight Crew Licence

You can now download your CASA issued flight crew licence on to your iPhone's wallet. Great idea but you still have to carry your paper licence with you because it doesn't show your medical. So what's the point of it? What have I missed?

Our company pilots are allowed to carry a digital copy of their licence/medical in lieu of paper licence. By digital, I mean the emailed copy or scanned copy.

I love the idea, could you point me towards a link to download it please?

You have to log on to the My CASA portal on your phone as the CASA system then recognises your phone. There is something about it on the My CASA website on the computer about downloading a QR code but the only QR code that I can find is on the digital version on my phone. It then joins your Covid certificate in the wallet.
I'm not overly computer savvy so I have more than likely missed something. It also doesn't work on Android yet.

Take a look at the Part 91 regulations coming into effect in December.
The digital license will become legal to use once these take effect.

Thanks. I thought there had to be a logical reason. Part of reinventing the wheel. Again....

Carrying an electronic copy of your medical is perfectly legal (presumably that's how you've received it from CASA).

Company requirements may differ.

And the new CASRs say that foreign NAA's might not recognise digital docs so you will need a hard copy anyway.

Got it now. Cheers. There is a disclaimer that says to still carry paper copy. I assume that is until Part 91 kicks in around December.

If your phone goes flat, does that mean you are no longer carrying your licence?

Don't be silly, you'd obviously be considered to no longer hold a valid IPC or type rating and you can expect the relevant penalty units to apply.

Site maintenance yesterday as advertised on the general CASA website. It’s working again now, just checked.

Devil

So, lemme see now....

When your phone is 'on' and 'active', you may have a licence.

IF your phone is 'off' you may or may not have a licence.

IF your phone is on 'Flight Mode' of course you may have a licence,

IF you have a piece of paper in your wallet / folder / flight bag, then you DO have a licence...no matter how 'tatty' that piece of paper may be...

That's PROGRESS.

So....Wot's the advantage..??

IF the phone is off, you turn it on. What’s the problem?

IF it’s in flight mode, you still have it. But the only place you’re likely to need it is on the ground, so why is flight mode relevant?

IF you are even required to carry your license on you currently (been a while since I’ve cared, because my company says I have to, but I believe there’s no requirement for a private pilot for example within Australia), then the progress is eventually you don’t need that tatty piece of paper, and maybe they might even include your medical certificate in it too! Imagine that!

THAT is the progress.

Stop looking at it like a critical old person.
