GA Jobs in U.K / Europe

Hi all,

So I have everything essentially (wrote in another post)... CPL, ATPL "credit", ME IR, low hours etc, etc and here in Darwin with not much going on. Going to try a few other places before considering a move to UK or Europe.

Anybody have any experience or knowledge of chances of getting an entry level job overseas vs here in Oz? I'd have to convert which is not ideal but I'll suck it up...

I feel like the pool is small here and maybe shooting off to the UK or Europe later in the year will mean more options.

Thoughts anyone?

I'd say your chances of getting an entry level flying job in UK/Europe are about the same as a Pom or European moving to Australia for an entry level flying job at the moment.

****e I did it 30 years ago and had the same kind of thoughts. Stick it out for the long haul and you will get there, pick a place and commit. Luck is certainly needed but as many say you can make your own luck!

The first question should be, do you have the right to live and work in Europe?

As said previously do you have the right to work here before you even have the licence. Not to mention there are pilots here with 10000hrs plus without work.

Short answer: No chance. GA jobs in Europe are hard to come by in the good times, speaking from experience of landing two after three years of trying ... But now with most pilots driving supermarket delivery trucks you have no chance. Sorry, try again in a few years.

Best to stay in Darwin, get a day job and settle down. Make sure you can pay your bills and continue to knock on doors, handing out your CV and catching up with chief pilots in your time off. Pop over to PNG to spread your CV and shake hands there. Wait it out, be patient. Something in the next few years should come along.

Check the UK forums on here - loads of pilots looking for work and the shambolic situation after BREXIT means the "authorities" are desperately struggling to clear up the enormous mess re-validating people who were already validated for UK ops. As a newbie you'll be at the back of the line and the bottom of the in-tray

It'll take 2-3 years before things are anywhere near "normal"

I wondered about an ICAO conversion and how BREXIT will effect that

Look at Irian Jaya or PNG. Not exactly “heaven on a stick” but that’s where the odd jobs do pop up because no one wants to go there. The excellent flying more than makes up for the primitive conditions and lousy pay.

It's a total mess in the UK - read the threads on EU/UK Licensing to get some feel for the scale of the issues.

I did this exact process pre covid, I had right to work in EU.

If you have no right to work, dont waste your time you have less than 0% chance. if you have an EU passport you can give it a go, but the conversion process is long and expensive... you need your aussie license to be current for the whole period of conversion too...

So basically go do your ATPL theory, 6-12 months for the 14 exams is a good time period to plan on... then a month to sort out the license conversions to an EASA license (dont bother with a UK one until brexit **** is settled to some point)

you could be ready to go post covid if you get lucky... however the above guys are right, stick it out in Darwin, head to PNG, head to Broome get your name out and go from there... the flying is more fun than sitting in the pointy end of a jet earning less than tesco wages atm...
