Maybe, or maybe I am going to apply some common-sense to grasping claim...
Common sense from someone who can't even string 9 words together in a coherent sentence?

Where on earth did you get you information traffic?
You seem however to manage ok with 5 words describing yourself.

Not exactly a reputable source..

No mention of SAFIS anymore?

If no SAFIS and only E inserted from 8500 to 6500 then Plan B changes for Ballina will be earth shatteringly.............................

Technology should only be used to support a decent lookout scan and Situational Awareness, in VMC Alerted, see and avoid is required to prevent collisions. I fear these skills are not being developed as people rely more and more on technology. This recent accident in the USA highlights midair’s still occur within controlled airspace and I’m sure the Cirrus would have been equipped with the latest tech.

See and avoid is a pretty ridiculous concept out of the circuit in a jet.

Watch a video sometime of a jet crew below say 5,000’ and see how much free time they have to look out of the window. I really am quite invested and eager to see all traffic relevant to me, but I often don’t.

...and a small, restricted view window at that!

Full of bug smears and HUD symbols too. Its just a ludicrous situation invented in an earlier, more innocent era.

And he was quite obviously seeing and avoiding the Cessna he was following, not the following Metroliner that he hit, side on while turning belly-up to it. He was also turning base, in a high-workload environment. One can only do so much. Poor communications in a Class D "traffic only" environment; the Cirrus pilot said "traffic sighted". Which traffic?

Directed traffic, see and avoid, what could possibly go wrong. Well now we have an example. Lets hope that an A320 or 737 can survive the impact that the Metro did.

LL, not we don't. There was no Directed Traffic given to the Metro. This scenario relied solely on the SR22 pilot. As the Metro pilot, would you have proceeded down final knowing that there was an aeroplane on base, possibly belly-up to you, which you couldn't see? Of course not. ATC should have, but apparently didn't, pass DTI to the Metro about the SR22. Yank/ICAO Class D is Clayton's controlled airspace.

SFIS will save you!

(I have no idea what deep insights the Santa Fe Indian School has about airspace categorisation and service provision, but I'll trust Airservices and CASA on this one. Or maybe it's the Southern Forests Irrigation Scheme...)

Bloggsy I didn't say that the Metro got DTI, but the SR22 was given traffic on the 172. I can't answer what the Metro pilot was thinking other than he thought he had an engine failure.

LL, what I was getting at was that DTI will/should be given to both parties. In this case, it wasn't.

Word is that the proposed SFIS is in the bin for a bit longer. Obviously ASA don't want the expense of a tower. I don't believe the SFIS as proposed will work?

10J.... Any date this year would be a stretch of a long bow, but maybe ASA don't have a long bow? As you would know consultation (in AvSEF) still needs to take place and a safety case provided to industry and then when agreed (?) upon an AIP SUP needs to be drafted and approved by CASA and then distributed, not only to those near BNA/MNG but to all that may use/transit that airspace, followed by an education program. ASA have not yet demonstrated any professionalism in this proposal and certainly no transparency in their thinking. Maybe it is time to think outside the box and for ASA to seek outside input?
Of course, if there is political pressure, anything is possible.

  • SFIS is not a separation service, it does not provide clearances, and it does not sequence aircraft into an aerodrome.
So its a CAGRS with a new name situated remotely?
