Qantas to move to Melbourne

Qantas to move to Melbourne
Is there anything to this or is Qantas just trying to leverage concessions out of Gladys and the SAC?
Qantas boss Alan Joyce and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews have met to discuss moving the airline's headquarters from Sydney to Melbourne, potentially bringing 5000 jobs to the state as it starts its economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Qantas launched a review of its property footprint in September and sparked a bidding war between state governments for financial incentives to either relocate its head offices or keep it in Mascot near Sydney Airport.

Nunc est bibendum
Can anyone see the CEO and senior executive of Australia’s major airline travelling from their respective homes in the city, northern or southern suburbs, to the far western Sydney suburbs for a couple of days a week let alone every day? A training centre in western Sydney though? That’s possible.
A move to MEL is about as likely as a move to Western Sydney. Similar reasons as well as the significant VR payouts for staff who don’t want to relocate to MEL. Much cheaper to move JQ to SYD in that respect.
I reckon the whole thing is a ploy to pressure the NSW government to pony up cash to keep QF in SYD and perhaps even contribute to the mascot training centre. Moving JQ is just a bonus.

Most likely a threat to Dan of sending the Jetstar office to Sydney unless they dangle the carrot and move to a new office in the Melbourne area with royalties galore.
Dan (sorry I mean us) is already covering Jetstar’s Avalon losses for the next 7 years.

If Qantas realise millions of dollars by selling its Sydney offices and allowing the Victorian Government to fund the next ten years of property expenses then I wouldn’t say it will never happen. Pre Covid I would have said not possible but now I’m not so sure.
Melbourne Airport and its surrounds have plenty of room for expansion, no curfew . Certainly the best proposition for airline expansion .
Plenty of vacant land to have a purpose built HO and training centre that is owned buy QF .

Ain't it all about exploiting the C-19 recession to your own benefit by dangling the jobs carrot in front of state politicians. If successful I wonder how many other unscrupulous CEOs will follow this shining example.

Remember the SkyGods CEO is cunning and it's his job to get the best deal for the shareholders and of course keep his bonuses and perks rolling in any way the grub can! Oh he's clever!
There is NO WAY Qantas will move its corporate headquarters from Sydney, not a hope in hell. Gladys will be told to give them what they want by the NSW powerbrokers. Those guys know exactly how important QF is to Sydney and its a lot more than people think.

The CEO probably won’t make it his problem for long if it happens

Yes.
The Rainbow A380 is the only aircraft that won’t be retired. I can’t see Qantas HQ move to a state that’s too far from Oxford Street and the Mardi Gras. How could the thousands of F11 staff possibly move from the street with its endless cafes bars and restaurants. Don’t forget basket weaving organic markets and wellness sessions twice a week. How could an airline possibly function properly if they move?
Western Sydney does not seem to have the allure for the bonus set. That will be the domain of the despised pleb pilots and trainers.
Might work out well for little Alan. He can segregate the pilots so he the HR minions and his clappers never has to see them again. He must be enjoying not seeing them thanks to stand down.
Brings to mind the story of one of our senior Training Captains who when entering the street was asked by a 20 something HR staff member what he was doing on the campus.
This is nothing more than a Joyce bluff and cheap con that I’m surprised the government is stupid enough to fall for.
Hopefully the Victorian’s put up such a good offer Joyce will have to accept.
I doubt it. He knows he can just take money off pilots that roll over quicker than a well trained dog.

Space isn't an issue. Everything is being downsized and no real plan for beyond the next 5 yeats to grow above what was in place this time last year.
QCD already effectively sold off, QCC will be next. Less planes to maintain.
It is all about getting the better deal in the existing facilities, and maybe moving JQ to SYD. However, there will be a Govt who stupidly will offer a big enough number.

I recall Jeff Kennett famously telling some corps to
go shove it when they gave him similar treatment back in the day.
Jetstar to Western Sydney makes sense considering a large chunk of the Mascot capacity will move over. Don’t have to be in the same building. Kmart and Target have dual offices in Melbourne.

Mods can we change the title of this thread to be more accurate because Qantas is not moving to Melbourne, it is only considering moving to Melbourne.
My take is that this is just AJ trying to get a good package from the VIC gov't so he can take that back to the NSW gov't and have them better it. I reckon JQ will relocate from MEL to SYD, not sure about QF BNE maintenance, but no way would QF relocated to MEL.
