Why?
They wouldn’t rescue Virgin ( yes I know they are foreign owned BUT they employ thousands of Australians )

Anyone understand the rationale behind this?? Australia sells off everything to the Chinese, who cares who owns Air Niugini? Why would it matter?

I agree, it makes no sense to incinerate another $140 million.

PX has failed largely because of the gross corruption and theft which has seen it bled dry over the past 20 years. COVID is a mere drop in the ocean. Bailing out PX is simply putting more money into the pockets of the rogues. As usual, the grassroots will see nothing.

Since Whitlam inflicted independence prematurely on the hapless PNG, little if anything has improved for the average Papua New Guinean. All we see is a string of newly minted billionaire politicians - modern day robber barons.

Perhaps a bit of Chinese “discipline” may not be such a bad thing.

This is purely politics. It is all about keeping the Chinese at bay.
In Australia it is acknowledged that selling the Darwin Ports to the Chinese was a mistake; along with Victorian Premier Dan borrowing to finance the ring road.

The Aussie PM's visit to PNG next week has been cancelled. The reason why is most important...

Next week there is every chance that the PM Marape will be deposed; local media reports K10mill is the price for Ministers to cross the floor. The the Chief Crook will again be former PM, Peter O'Steal.

And again the "unwashed" miss out on any medical benefit, schools, and the list goes on.

The issues facing Air Niugini are enormous.

The Fokker 100 fleet is unreliable, parts are scarce, it would appear from the parking area near the PX hangar that F100, P2-AND will possibly never fly again and has become a donor aircraft. The Fokker 70, P2-ANY is probably in the same state of disrepair.
By far the most reliable aircraft in the PX fleet is the sole Dash-8-400; although there is talk of others on the way. The previous sale of the PX Dash 8-400 fleet was a mistake and based solely upon the governments desire to become a sole Jet operator.

The Government/Air Niugini/PM's or GG's, Falcon 900 has not flown since June 2020. We can assume no crew recency not even a few circuits to keep the system up and running. The Falcon 900 in today's market is probably worth more than all the Fokker 100's.
If the Falcon 900 was to go for 'open' Auction; no sealed bids and no Prime Ministers subtracting administrative fees. The money might buy a few Dash 8-400's

I can see it now, the AUS government $140 million grant to PX, PX as a State Owned Enterprise pays $140 million dividend to the owner, the PNG Government. PX cries poor and then the cycle continues.

And another palatial home gets bought In Point Piper, maybe in the same street as one owned by an X PNG Prime Minister valued at $13 million.

It's roughly 1500m from northern most tip of Qld to PNG.

If you don't mind sharks & crocs you could swim it.

Last thing we want is chinese breathing down our necks.

They are already trying to "take over" some Pacific Island nations. Next thing, their will be a Chinese military base in Pacific.

Fear if we don't let Australians fly to Fiji & other Pacific tourist islands soon, they will be offered 100 billion dollar chinese loan each, which they'll never be able to repay, so china will simple move in.

I am not sure any of the Pacific nations are in line to get 100 times their GDP from China, but I get your drift. Unfortunately, PNG knows this game well and plays Australia off against China whilst either wasting the money on fantasy Skyrail plans, or merely through blatant corruption. If Australia wants to keep the Chinese at bay, it should insist on 99 year leases for key bases in return for investment.

Handing Air Niugini $140m is like making the local alcoholic manager of the Bottle Shop.

Mini,
I think your missing the point. The former PM (Peter O'Steal) house in North Sydney is due for renovation.

Don't box yourself in Kag, it could be any member of the government (past of present) who needs a new penthouse or another maserati.
