The union person leaking this dribble ( it ain’t intell) would be familiar to many at Qantas and he is making a right tool of himself at the moment looking for payback for himself. Like everyone else he has no idea what Bain are going to do. Like all companies who were going to bail VA out there was always going to be cuts, just like EVERY other airline in the world. None of that result was brain surgery. Indeed there were sone big cuts before it went into VA.

I am not sure if the inner workings of Voluntary Administration versus US style Chapter 11, but under Chapter 11, equipment can be handed back to lessors on an "as is where is" basis. I have seen aircraft returned to lessors which are no longer airworthy due to expired scheduled maintenance. The lessor has been responsible for conducting outstanding maintenance and flying the aircraft back to the chosen parking destination.

Do they fly in to rough strips eg gravel airfields? I’m guessing no... in northern Canada some of the older 737s are still in use for operation to gravel runways. The newer ones and buses don’t come with gravel kit as an option is my understanding.
FIFO- Fly in Fly out. Probably like Canada most of the mines are remote from the cities so the workers will fly in for say 2 weeks then fly out back to a capital city for two weeks. Contracts vary but that would be one type.
The mines are like most companies looking for the cheapest option and the very old Fokkers are much cheaper compared to a 737. Most strips now for the bigger mines are pretty good for being in the middle of nowhere and are bitumen and satellites make things easier.

There's one operator in Australia flying jets in to gravel strip using BAe146 /Avro RJ for the FIFO contracts. They have also started operating Dash 8 Q400s in to gravel strips as well.
For the benefits of some of us from the oppositely oriented parts of the world, what are the mining contracts and what’s special about them for aircraft types? And why are they called FIFO for that matter?

The complication of that is that an airline (inherently used to high utlisiation on scheduled routes) invariably needs a larger number of airframes that will see lower overall utilisation (for some reason the shift changes at nearly every mine site seem to occur at the same time). As a result, largish fleets of older less efficent types have a niche - and what easier way to get hold of lucrative contracts and cheap older aircraft than to buy up the operators of them as Qantas and Virgin have done over the last several years.

For instance, American Airlines today is a result of combining, Trans Caribbean,Air California,Eastern,Reno Air,Ozark/TWA,US Airways.
Same story for Delta and United which are a result of 5 or 6 smaller airlines. I think the only airline that didn't merge was poor old Braniff.
The only ones I can think of downunder :
ANA & Ansett forming Ansett-ANA
TAA/Australian merged into Qantas
Eastern/Sunstate/Southern forming Qantaslink throw in Impulse.
Where am I going with this. Well surprisingly with most airlines on the brink the word merger has not popped up.

Apart from having quite a few "facts" completely wrong in that article, I don't see how virgin's plans to build the school were secret. Infact Mr me too JB was sprouting it in the media far and wide that they were going to build a pilot school after Qantas announced theirs.
Did it with the TT guys during a PS live stream - shortly after they asked TT redundancy questions their Accounts deactivated prior to their terminations.
