New Zealand place harsh restrictions on travel

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12316692

"KEY POINTS• Effective from midnight Sunday, all travellers, except for those coming from the Pacific islands, will have to self-isolate for 14 days on their arrival to New Zealand
• The PM says the rules are the toughest in the world
• She told New Zealanders not to travel overseas if they don't have to and issued stark advice: no hugs, hongi or handshakes
• All cruise ships have been asked to not come to NZ until June 30
• There will also be further announcements on mass gatherings

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced all travellers will have to self-isolate on their arrival to New Zealand, apart from those coming from the Pacific Islands.

She said the measures - in effect as of midnight Sunday - include New Zealanders.

The restrictions will be reviewed in 16 days and there will be more advice for self-isolation next week. There were already clear guidelines for employers on sick pay and working-from-home advice."

What are they trying to do? Bankrupt Air NZ for the second time in 20 years?

I think Air NZ are pretty adept at doing that to themselves.

No, it will bankrupt Jetstar NZ and Virgin NZ and Air NZ will get a government bailout as the government is a majority shareholder.

Ah yes I didn't realise they were still government owned. In that case you are correct. Probably a good tactical move in a time of crisis.

I think it is great that politicians are catching it. These are the people in society who constantly put themselves above everybody else, are paid and receive perks that no other worker receives, live in their Government bubble and have no idea what is happening in the real world. Wait until the worlds finances collapse and there is a lawless society who are desperate for food and medicine - they won’t be safe from that either!

Interesting - does that mean airlines flying into NZ will quickly run out of crew if arrivals have to self quarantine for 14 days or do crew stay on the aircraft for the return flights ?😳😳

Crew aren't subject to those measures.

By looking at the results in Wuhan where the first wave seems to have well and truly peaked, I would imagine time wise these restrictions will probably last 6-8 weeks, but if the curve is indeed flattened and the infection rate doesn’t explode like China and Italy, this could go on for 4-6 months, Airline industry concerned prepare for a bloodbath...

So crew who potentially are asymptomatic carriers defeat the purpose of the fourteen day quarantine period during layovers.

Ha. Not likely to be next week. But only a fool in cloud cuckoo land can’t see the writing on the wall. If you believe that printing money for the past 20 years and having a debt that cannot be contained and will only end in default is good fiscal management, then there is no hope for you. There is a reset coming. Just a matter of when not if.

I’d like the source as well. I’ve been scouting around but can’t find it. Cheers

I have seen no such exclusion. Most pundits are putting money on near total cancellation of international flights into and out of NZ with the exception of some charter flights to move people who get stuck. Also rumours of the government putting a substantial capital injection into Air NZ which is nice for them but not great for all other airlines. Jetconnect and Virgin NZ will effectively be grounded with massive capacity cuts to Air NZ and Jetstar. Buckle in it’s going to be a wild ride.
