I would suspect it was supposed to be a precautionary evacuation via the slides since it would take too long to taxi to the gate or get stairs to the plane. But the method of use of the slides got lost in translation and it became an emergency evac. The industry doesn’t put enough training into communication between the flight and cabin crew.

Passenger on the news said the captain said evacuate evacuate over the pa so I doubt it was precautionary.

Nope. If the crew deems it appropriate (as it will be with a planeload of passengers in summer) for the APU bleed to be on, then it’ll be on.

What else was the Capt to say. It is either evacuate so that the cabin crew know exactly what to do or come back and have a group discussion over a cup of coffee in the galley.

SOP are there for a reason. Cabin crew yell so as to reinforce what is required.

design overhead lockers that lock ...

I would not order a 'Precautionary' evacuation and pop the slides. We'd wait for stairs or taxi to the gate. It was an 'Emergency' evacuation and rightly so. These fumes kill FULLSTOP.

In my company at least, there is provisions for precautionary evacuations. But these are planned evacuations with appropriate PA’s etc. beforehand and done in an orderly fashion. There’s no way this would have been a precautionary evacuation otherwise it would have been known in advance.

In my company we no longer have the option of a precautionary disembarkation with slides. If there’s a safety concern its a full-blown evacuation with all of the attendant drama and minor injuries.

Obviously, you did read the links provided in the post above Industry Insider, before shooting off at the mouth?

Do a little research for yourself Industry Insider.
I have no idea what provoked your vitriol Snoopy Dog Dog but I did read your links and neither related to rhetorical point I was making. Looks like you have blown a seal.

After green hydraulic loss.Aircraft returns while taxiing to gate APU started and Hydraulic fluid invested into APU inlet.
this causes white smoke/fumes after engines shutdown due packs now running off bleed air.
maybe airbus need to rewrite the QRH.
Full system hydraulic loss don’t Select APU bleed ON.
external power on arrival if available.

It was at the gate. Qantas no longer do Precautionary Evacuations and (as mentioned) the Captain made it quite plain….."Evacuate, Evacuate, Evacuate"

Rumour has it that..............
APU was started as aircraft was being towed back (heading north) on its path to Bay 10,
Prevailing wind was from the north, and when aircraft was turn in from DOM 1/TWY C the northerly blew the smoke from the superheated hydraulic oil back up the pipe into the pax cabin.
Captain called Mayday Mayday Mayday on Sydney Ground East 121.7 and deployed the emergency slides.
You would have to safely assume he was pre-empting a possible fire. Best and only call any trained professional would make in those circumstances.
So bingo, from Local Standby to Full emergency in a hearbeat, 100/100 to all those involved, possible disaster averted and as it turned out, it became just another news item on the 6 o'clock News.
For anyone who believes that pilots are overpaid please go away and have a good think about that........

Possibly similar to the the EK 330 that they evacuated a few years ago on the tarmac at Karachi. Hyd leak during pushback, hyd oil onto something hot on apu and hyd smoke then entered the cabin.
I'm sure it is on avherald, (though Simon didn't want to report it a few years ago initially.)

Maybe a QRH/SOP change? "With a hydraulic leak turn off off bleeds prior to touchdown and keep off until the plane is deplaned and maintenance has been accomplished."

There is 'Toxic Cabin Air' on the ramp, airstairs, jet bridges, ground equipment, etc, etc. More than in the cabin except during or after a leak event.

Interesting scenario ( SLF here) : if they were at the gate, would the CC then have to arm the doors again before opening them ? Don't they usually disarm on approach to the gate ?
