Both sides of the negotiation watch the weather during the negotiation, or at least they should
Qantas is really trying to engage with the pilots during the negotiation, rather than attempt to sell it afterwards. This is unprecedented.

There is huge noise about Pilots.
What about Cabin crew?
How many ? Pay is not as important as the other costs..
The cost of one more or one less would equate to Thousands of $ per round trip Hotel plus meals. Then consider one more crew = one less passenger, big $

That the pilots think some persiflage is "negotiation" says a lot.
What percentage of hourly operating costs would you posit both cabin and flight crew costs represent?
Surely you would HAVE to be at the very least (at the VERY least!) highly suspicious of anyone in a Qf uniform being anything other than aggressive!
After all these years, if anyone in a Qf management uniform is being at all 'nice' - there will be a bloody good reason!!!!

Pilots appear a little ambivalent about Project Sunrise. Particularly with the disseminated information so far.
Don’t assume there is no pressure on mgmt. Highly ambitious people will posture friendliness or threats as needed to gain traction. We just haven’t heard the threats yet...but they will come.

Faux outrage assumed
For such an "important" programme they're certainly not pushing very hard.......................
Seeing the Coronavirus will start a nose dive for the economy and business,
AJ will say that conditions don’t exist at this time for such a significant investment.
Qantas will continue to operate existing fleet until conditions improve.
No need for AJ to thank his pilots.
Just sign off a token 3% EA and pay them their overdue bonus!

THEN they’ll scrap/defer PS.
On previous form I'm surprised they haven't suggested a cut in wages due to the (potential) drop in business due to events in China.....................
I see the chief pilot has written a very long winded letter that has just a slight hint of desperation in it.
There is one factor that they just don’t get.
NO ONE wants to fly it!
If they are reading this then realise you have to provide some sort of incentive for the pilots to do it.
Be it night credits....whatever!
The way it’s going they’ve got no chance of it getting through.

I wouldn't go that far. There will always be willing and able bodies. If it means promotion or even simply employment - you'll have a conga-line. Once they start to suffer the metabolic and cognitive consequences from it however - no amount of 'compensation' will suffice. You're in the fast-lane to accelerated mortality. The research literature is now pervasive. Please don't chase the coin, for that will be of no use to you when your health declines. Chase what really matters - minimising the deleterious effects this new flying will serve through other terms that focus rest, recovery and rejuvenation. It is the only thing that will matter. Not a few extra (and immaterial) post-tax dollars. I don't hear much about this. You must deeply care about it. Your health is all you have.

I'm a pilot - but not for commercial purposes. I care more for crew, be that cabin or technical, and their health outcomes. As more the science comes to light - it is paramount that 'crew conditions' consider this more critically. That's my interest in this. And that is where a lot of energy needs to be focussed.
