Cobham Q400's

Just seen on Seek that Cobham are looking for a fleet manager and a training manager for their newly established fleet of Q400's. Is this part of the surveillance contract?

I assumed it was for the surveillance contact but it states "Newly established Q400 fleet" and is Perth based. Sounds too me like Cobham are adding Q400s to there Perth operations be it own charter or contract.

The is now a Fleet Training Manager Position too

The Role

Reporting to the Fleet Manager (FM), the Fleet Training Manager will oversee and deliver front-line training to Cobham Regional Services’ newly established fleet of Q400 pilots.

Key Responsibilities

** Holding safety as a core value and contribute to the achievement of a zero harm and an incident/injury free environment through active participation in all safety;

** Training, assessing and checking of pilots and trainee pilots in Company aircraft, and, where applicable, simulators and synthetic trainers in accordance with operating manuals;

** Recommending remedial training, currency programs or suspension of individual pilots;

** Recording and monitoring the performance of individual pilots in training, and providing updates to the FM regarding flight proficiency; and

** Maintaining a type rating on the Q400 aircraft type.

Key Person Criteria

** The right to legally live and work in Australia;

** Experience in pilot training and check;

** A proven track-record in projects, particularly in the introduction of new aircraft types; and

** Leadership and training experience on Dash 8 or Q400 aircraft is desirable.

About us

All applicants must have the right to live and work in Australia.

Didn't Cobham just get rid of their Embraers citing reliability issues?

Wasn’t due to reliability (apparently it was quite reliable) more so to do with a contract not requiring/wanting it anymore.

Neither was true according to my source. Very reliable but the contract client paid the lease and the multi-national oil and gas company was trying to save a few dollars. It was simply not extended beyond the original three year contract. The next one is leased by Cobham apparently giving them a little more flexibility.

Q400 combi would probably provide a bit of bang for the buck for a few OGP clients, not sure if there is an STC available.

Q400 also only requires differences training for type rated Dash 8 pilots - if they can spare any from other contracts?????

Sounds interesting.

The initial Q400s - only 1 or 2 of them - are intended to replace 146s that will get retired as these join the fleet.

Mainly due to Cobham being hesitant to seek a lessor outside of their usual one, thus the lease became too much of a burden for the client in times when they were doing all they could to cut costs (including putting that particular contract up for tender).

Yep, which is why it's only expected to be around for 6 months. Longer only if Cobham can find a client that wants it.

Supposedly the thing is going to operate in basic JetGo livery with the VA interior still installed. Along with their BVI Airways painted RJ and the recently departed Pionair 146 that they chartered, brand recognition doesn't seem to be a priority...

Better keep the 146’s around to rescue the Q400s or they will loose the contract. BMI had to do exactly that for many years.

And Q400s are back in PX’s cross hairs for a Fokker replacement. Maybe related....

Q400 combi would be a money maker as I have already mentioned.

Anyone know if there is a Combi or full palletised STC available for the Q400?
