Aviation Industry Employee Engagement Survey 2018

Hi all,

The airlines have their little bonus securing staff engagement surveys out again and as usual, they will declare that the staff are all happy. I think we all know it is a sham as they never release any details. As we have done for the previous 7 years, the ALAEA are running our staff engagement survey with the results to be released in full.

Each year about 500 (mainly) Pilots read this thread and contribute to our survey which is fantastic. I hope you can each take the 10 minutes or so to complete it again this year via the following link -

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/pprune2018

Here are the results from last year and the time lapsed version.

cheers
Steve Purvinas
ALAEA Federal Secretary

Employee engagement and satisfaction about equal amongst those three. Dismal across the whole industry.

Steve, what is your organisation doing to battle sham contracting arrangements in the Engineering side of things? Engineers just want full time jobs so they can pay (or even qualify for) a mortgage.

Companies are rewarded with engaged and positive employees. The rise of contracting companies within our industry is KILLING our industry.

I lost a (previously full time) mate to suicide this year so it's close to home.

I suggest Cobham should be broken down into business units. Each unit has its own management structure, EBA and completely independent levels of engagement. Airline services being Qlink contract, regional and special mission ( SAR and coast watch)

Amusing that VA's dramatic drop in 'engagement' is roughly parallel to the 'miracle man' who was a media darling for so long, while his opposite number was vilified. Hardly ever read a word about Mr Business Class now they're entering their 6th potential year of no profit and a totally pathetic management...

I’m intrigued by the RFDS result.

Based on zero knowledge and experience I would have thought that being an RFDS employee would be a great job.

AP: I still take my hat off to JB. He started with a tin pot loser airline and created a viable business alternative to QF. That’s quite an achievement - and I’d go so far as to say that no one at VoZ has had the benefit of Qf’s leadership to judge by. If Big Gay Al was running VOz and JB was at QF I suspect things would have been quite different. However, unless you really (to quite Steve Jobs) grok what it’s all about - you will be found out. Some are worse than others.

I agree this contracting sham is bad for everyone except CEOs. In Engineering, both Jetstar and Virgin use them. Qantas do as well in Heavy Maintenance but not for LAMEs. The bloke have no job security.

What are we doing about it? Every EA we try and prevent the growth of contractors but the airlines always strongly oppose any limitations knowing that they can hire and fire contractors with ease.

Collectively the unions who are in the ACTU (AIPA, FAAA and ALAEA) are working on the drafting of a new set of workplace laws revamping the entire useless Fair Work Act. In the case of our union, we are lending our in house Lawyer 3 days a week to the ACTU to work on the drafting.

The current laws allow airlines to use contractors at will. They are stacked against workers in all industries. We need fairer laws and the revamped FWA will hopefully give us that. No LNP Govt. would ever support these changes however so their implementation is contingent on the ALP winning control of both houses.

I know most Pilots would be more inclined to vote conservative. I haven't voted ALP for a long time either. I will this time. I view it like this. The single most important thing to me and our members is our income. Electricity prices, road tolls, gay marriage, immigration and the way schools are funded mean nothing if you don't have an income.

Contracting will change if we get rid of Turnbull.

Would love to split Cobham into departments. You'd need a bucket load of responses from Cobham employees though to do that. Without email addresses of all employees the data would be too unreliable.

I can tell you, at least at RFDS WA, they are a bunch of mongrels to deal with. I am negotiating an EA there for Engineers and I put out one notice. Next I've got Lawyers threatening me to withdraw the notice or they sue me with defamation. I thought my notice was quite tame.

“The owner, the employees, and the buying public are all one and the same, and unless an industry can so manage itself as to keep wages high and prices low it destroys itself, for otherwise it limits the number of its customers. One’s own employees ought to be one’s own best customers.”
Henry Ford had it right, nearly 100 years ago.
Modern management theory taught at Post Graduate courses the world over denigrate people to the point of simply an entry on a spreadsheet. The objective of 'reducing labour unit cost' is the raison d'etre

Airlines with a few notable exceptions blindly follow the conga line of labour unit cost reduction. Consequently outsourcing is a standard play! For MBA trained accountants it is never about people, never about collective effort, it is simply about cost. In such an equation a downwards spiral continues. Faced with declining taxation revenues, and with both sides of politics as inept as the other, for they are neither learned nor scholarly they listen to their donors (employer groups) further restricting wage growth.

Years of stagnant wage growth in Western economies now have the negative feedback; employees lack sufficient personal disposable income to be avid consumers, so demand declines and management are puzzled. Revenue stagnates, so they cut more costs.

In Australia the enlightened political leadership believe running immigration at 2.5 times OECD historical is the way around it; more immigrants, more consumers and GDP grows.
They never look at GDP per capita as it continues to fall, so despite snake oil salesmen (Property Council Treasurer Scott) telling you your 'elected members' want wage growth they do not. Employers like oversupply, keeps labour keen, just like in the 19th century! Employer groups also donate much more money

Essentially immigration on a balance sheet is a 'sugar high'.

Voltaire was also against democracy, since he believed that people were inherently selfish. He thought that government run by the people would be carried by their own selfish interests and not with an idea of "virtue," the notion of putting civic duties before one's own private interests. In this way he was quite similar to some of America's Founders who did not believe that all citizens should have equal power in the government.
Intriguing n'est pas?

That’s disturbing.

Thanks for the response.

Oui, Si le vote pouvait changer quoi que ce soit ce serait illégal!

People still are under the illusion that voting changes anything. When one looks at Comrade Robb, from trade minister (and a Chinese FTA) to $900k job working for Chinese interests, the founding fathers would rightly ask is this not treason?

Could someone please explain how Qantas has 41% engagement? Are Angels allowed to vote 10 times? Or does it only count if you work in QCC/D?

I run these surveys and it has nothing to do with Qantas. The majority of responders are LAMEs and Pilots followed by FAs.

How at 41%? It's how surveys work. So some of the questions are geared towards your view of management which tend always to go low. Others such as "do you get along well with your workmates", tend to rate high.

At Qantas, nearly all the safety questions achieve high marks, even by disgruntled employees. So you add them all together through standard formulas etc... and it comes out at 41%.

Sorry, I should have said "how could it possibly be that high?"
