2017 Aviation Employee Engagement Results

Employee Engagement Results 2017

Thanks to all the Airline Employees who contributed to our annual cross sector employee engagement survey for 2017. This is the sixth year we have conducted the poll and some handy data is now emerging. The ALAEA uses it when lobbying, for Enterprise Agreement negotiations and so we can let everyone who works in our sector know the best place to work.

This year we had over 1600 people tell us how they feel about their employer. The questions asked were similar to those the various companies run internally. The difference with our survey is that we ask the same questions regardless of the company staff work for and unlike the companies, we release the results.

The first table is a total based on all questions giving a proper engagement score based on the entire survey. This is different to the loose figures thrown out by airlines when they grossly exaggerate how “engaged” staff are so the managers can meet their KPI bonuses.

Last year the internal Qantas polling was explained to Flight Attendants. Qantas take less than 10 of the 50 or so questions asked when they measure employee engagement and those questions are the nice and fluffy ones such as – Do you get along well with your work colleagues? According to the manager, Qantas (and most likely other employers) never include in their results questions about the way staff rate the performance of their managers or if they feel that previous surveys have been acted upon by the company. Basically, they don’t want to drag the rate down when they report to their Boards.

Top of our list this year was AMSA, a maintenance provider who supply services to many airlines, primarily foreign operators, in Australia. AMSA have always polled well, never dropping below 70% engagement.
Qantas have rated higher than Virgin for the first time since we commenced the measurements in 2012. Whilst Qantas are slightly up, Virgin have been constantly falling from a high of 75% to 35% over 6 years.

The Air Niugini result at the bottom is our lowest mark ever and this is not a technical anomaly by rating half a dozen angry employees. We had a solid number of contributors from our PNG friends and not one of them rated the performance of their management team anything above a zero. It may be a place to avoid if you are looking for work.

The full breakdown and history of each employers concludes our yearly results.

Seems the poorer the management rates, the bigger the fleet
Or another way
Good management = small operation

Go figure ....

Be quite a few that will be surprised it was as high as that!!!

Maybe next year a negative value choice could be added.

Bullwinkle,

The survey was done before JT got boned. It would be fascinating to see the same survey done again now...
