"technical glitch' grounds DEP aircraft at Melbourne

another grounding episode at MEL?

Planes at Melbourne Airport were grounded and others were prevented from landing on Tuesday morning due to a 'technical glitch'.
Domestic and international flights were left circling the airport after the airport said there had been an issue with 'network connectivity' that was affecting check-in and baggage.
3AW Mornings radio station reports that it received several calls from people at the airport, who said it was at a standstill

How does an issue with check-in and baggage prevent aircraft from landing?

Might have been a case of where to park the arrivals without choking taxiways, and if parking off-stand what access arrangements could be made.

I was listening to 3AW at the time and immediatly checked Flightradar24 and NAIPS.

Flightradar24 showed Aircraft continuing to operate in and out, most were doing 3 or 4 laps of the hold.

The ATIS indicated LVP in force, 16 for arrivals with rapid exit G closed, 27 for departures. I saw several VA NZ JQ flights departing.

So, the Airport was not stopped, only slowed down by LVP and landing A/C taking longer to vacate.

The issue was effecting check in and boarding systems for about 1 hour, power failure in the International Terminal as well, that slowed or delayed departures.

3AW were beating it up to make a story, made worse by @Melair refusing to call 3AW and give the details.

As they say, Fathom, be the first to divert... you'll be the first back home.
