Appreciate the feedback and opinion given by everyone so far.

If it was a guaranteed start I would easily stay. At the moment I’m pretty torn on deciding whether to move across to double my salary and not worry about the financial side of starting a family, or hope that nothing happens for the next 2-3 years that could slow down the hiring or even stop the process.

All the comments make you realise the risk/reward for crew no longer stacks up. Airlines abuse the seniority system, as they know we won’t leave.
It really is time for PIA across the board.
Even QF hiring practices need to be addressed…this posters situation is a perfect example of a broken system.
One seniority list for red tails. End of story. Stop using subsidiaries to undermine and control us.

You’ve got to stop listening to those fairies at the bottom of the garden.

For internal candidates, remember there is a two year moratorium before being eligible for re-hire within the group.

I did this for a similar situation I had. Worked for me. Just be polite about how you word it. 🤷‍♂️

Definitely didn’t make it as a pilot…that is crystal clear. So bitter.
I was a toolmaker. I worked with a few tools.

I never listened to the pixies though.

Trying to bring the conversation back on track, I'm sure there are plenty of people that might be more interested in responses to the above.

I was half listening to an interview with Adam Jacob, co-founder of Hatch, on ABC News channel about an hour ago. The discussion concerned a survey Hatch had conducted of Gen Z employees. One finding was that the people surveyed generally preferred higher pay over job 'perks'. He was asked which companies were thought of more highly. He mentioned there was a top 20(?) list of such companies, both major and minor. The only one I thought I heard him mention was Qantas. Did I hear right??

I tried to look up an equivalent item on the internet and the nearest I could find was the start of a recent "The Age" subscriber only article that must relate to the same survey:

Hatch is an AI-driven job placement agency of which QANTAS is a client. No surprise then it appears in the Top 20 list alongside other Hatch client firms. No surprise either that engineers and pilots are not advertised roles for QANTAS, appearing on Hatch’s website.

Thanks for digging Pearly White. So indeed Qantas was included in the top 20 this year: https://www.hatch.team/hotlist-2024

The blurb for them has: "Gen Z love... That Qantas Group give opportunities for people to grow and develop in supportive environments across aviation, marketing, technology and more."

OK, so I have never worked for Qantas so can't make my own assessment, but it isn't the vibe I pick up from what I read in the media. I wonder if this is a case of "cash for comments" or that Gen Z staff who were surveyed generally DO have such an experience at Qantas? I guess no Gen Z former Qantas ground staff were included in the survey in any case...

Qantas bends over backwards to accommodate GEN Z etc, everyday we are bombarded with emailed regarding LGBTQ+ days, First Nation Days, Mental Wellbeing Days and many more. Qantas has a truely WOKE corporate culture who love to publicise just how open and welcoming they are to all comers all while turning the screws in terms and conditions of frontline workers.

Newscorp is also on that list and they're the group that defines 'woke' culture to the masses so I find it hard to believe that it's the case.

They’re more than happy to give office new hires first class high priority travel day one.
all while telling their pilot group to get ******.
nice given we spend half our lives away from family.
more important to look after your HR intern

Don't forget they do that to the customers as well, ghost flight customers getting satisfaction trying to get their hands on a refund, you need to cough $99 up to Vanessa for the privilege.

I had to look up the definition: "Gen Z refers to people born between 1995 and 2010". So how many pilots or aurcraft engineers at Qantas Group who are now 29 years old or younger? I would assume a few. How do they feel about the company?
As for the "WOKE" term, I just take that as conservative right wing media types trying to have a dig at fair minded people or companies. A true WOKE company would treat all staff fairly regardless of age, gender, orientation etc. I would be happy to work for such a company.

Probably pretty good. A career in a legacy carrier is best experienced by joining as early as you can. 40% of the pilot group will hit retirement in the next 15 years, so if you join at 25 and take the first command available you may spend almost 2/3rds of your career in the LHS.
