Surveillance Tools for ATC over Oceanic Airspace

Hi all,

I have recently started flying to Australia and have a question regarding the surveillance system that ATC uses over the Ocean. I believe that almost all of Australia is covered by ADS-B but what sort of coverage exists over the oceans? Is is Satcom Based ADS-C only?

Thanks

As far as surveillance goes, ADS-C is all that is available outside ground based coverage. Not just in Australia, but anywhere.

ADS-B receivers are currently being installed on the Irridium satellite network which will permit worldwide coverage by 2018.
