No PER base anymore.

For a BNE-based Q400 F/O you can expect in each 28 day roster;

100-130 duty hours
70-80 flight hours
2-4 reserve days (of which you will work 3-4)
3-6 overnights
8-9 days off

New hires will probably see the rosters drop slightly but not by much.

As for whether you go onto the Q400 or the classic, that's all supply and demand and not necessarily based on your previous experience.

How does that differ for FO's on the 400 in the other bases? Also, how different is the 300 roster?

I guess the pay would be quite different being a FO on the Q400 or Q300?

For all those wondering about pay I will try and give you an accurate rundown of what you might expect - straight from the Sunstate EBA. The allowances figure I've put in is an informed guess based on average hours worked on current rosters but I would say is accurate within +/- 5k. From what I can see the duty hours between bases doesn't vary much, it's generally more to do with the type you're on. Bare in mind, although you'll end up with more coin in your pocket on the Q400, you'll also be doing almost double the duty - this is all subject to change with more pilots joining.

BNE/ADL FO Q300 65%: base $68308 + allowances (roughly 20k) = $88000PA
BNE/ADL FO Q300 55%: base $57799 + allowances (roughly 20k) = $78000PA
BNE/CNS FO Q400 65%: base $73089 + allowances (roughly 25K) = $98000PA
BNE/CNS FO Q400 55%: base $61844 + allowances (roughly 25k) = $87000PA
(the 400 allowances are conservative. Currently I'd expect it might be a bit more due to crew shortage)

I can't give an accurate rundown of Eastern bases but generally the 300 guys/girls are doing a fair bit more flying than the Sunnies 300 FO's so you could expect and extra 5k or so on top of the above figures?? The SYD 400 crew are doing similar hours to BNE/CNS guys but Mildura is alot less duty. You can forget about a MEL base for a few years.

Can you give us a breakdown of the allowances?

The EBA's are on the AFAP and Fair Work Australia websites. Allowances are made up of two main items: Overnight allowances (up to $140.00-ish, depending on the overnight) and Duty Hour Allowance (DHA - $6.00 per hour for an FO). There are other allowances, but these two make up the "bread and butter" as it were. Overnight allowances aren't taxed, DHA is.

The allowance figures that Frank_The_Tank are giving are in the ball-park. But to earn them you'd be doing the hours that Going Nowhere stated earlier.

To get around 20k in allowances P.A, you'd have to do around 8 overnights (i.e. two overnights per week) and work around 120 hours duty per roster. Less 1 1/2 rosters (6 weeks annual leave). That would give you around $12k in overnights, and $8k in DHA.

Not all bases do this kind of flying (e.g. Mildura, but you probably wont get there) but it is common in Melbourne (you wont get there either). Sydney do more duty and less overnights, so less allowances.

However, doing that amount of hours will wear you out! We are so short-staffed right now, especially in the FO ranks, that guys are getting flogged. FO's are regularly flying 19 or 20 days out of every 28 day roster. Our overnights are typically min-rest.

A standard overnight is you'll fly three or five sectors on day one, leaving the aircraft at 8:30 (ish) pm. You'll get back to the airport at 6:00am the following morning for another three sectors. The airport is normally a 20 minute drive from the hotel, but can be as much as 40 minutes. So getting a good night's sleep can be a problem.

As a new-start FO with less than 2000 hours you'll be on that 55% pay for three years, regardless of if you get 2000 hours within that time.

Do not expect these type of work hours to change any time soon. This year there will be a massive exodus of Qlink pilots and our management have no idea on how to cope. It will be at least 12 months before crew numbers get to adequate levels again, unless in that time we shed some flying.

Howdy folks

What are the chances of getting a Melbourne base if you request it as your only choice, considering that you coming from a Q400 background with 1700 hrs and over 3500 ME TT.(CASA ATPL)
PS: no disrespect to the more senior ones waiting for a Mel base!

With the massive exodus of QLink pilots, how long can an FO expect for captaincy on the Q400.

Cheers

tocum,

The chances of a Melbourne base is minimal. I say minimal instead of nil because "stranger things have happened" in the past. It matters not what your prior experience is, or what you put down as your base preferences.

All this, including time to command, has been covered several times in several threads.

Are you able to list your estimate on the order of likeliness of basing preferences (obviously with Melbourne last). To save each person asking a question about their preferred base?

As work force currently stands/demand for future, my guess:
1. SYD 30%
2. BNE 27%
3. CNS 20%
4. ADL 11%
5. MQL 10%
6. MEL 2%

Divosh quite rightly pointed out my estimates for wages were pushing it a bit with allowances. I have also accounted for working an RDO per roster as well. This is something in the vicinity of $500
Forget about Melbourne. There are Sydney based guys/girls who have been waiting 3 years to get there and those people will be offered the spots before any new hires. My advice would be to bid for the bases on the EBA where you want to end up. I.E. If you want MEL, bid for: MEL MQL and SYD. Basically, basing preferences work as follows:

If a MEL spot is offered:
1. Eastern pilot highest on Eastern senority
then, if no one bids
2. Any pilot already working for the QantasLink group
then if still, no bids
3. Offered to new hire

As pointed out previously, this is SENIORITY based company. It doesn't matter if you got your CPL/IR the day before your start date and have 150TT or you have 5000TT with 3000 command on a Q400. You're treated the same from your start date and command time will generally not vary between two applicants with the same start date so long as when your number comes up, you have the requirements and are deemed capable of a command.

It's been mentioned before on previous threads. A new course every 6 weeks until the end of the year. 6 positions in each course.

Just wondering if anyone has completed an online interview recently and waiting to hear back how they went?

How safe is ADL base, given the operation was tried there a few years back with limited duration. Busy enough? Possibly expanding? What chances of the 400 moving down there, or will it be the place that 300's go to die?

I wouldn't bet on seeing the Q400 down there for a while yet.

Base seems pretty steady, not much movement at the moment.

I'd be surprised to see much expansion in the near future.

Remember also that, regardless of what you're told, you are not applying for a job with qantaslink. You're applying for a job with EAA or SSA. If you want to be in MEL, then take a base in SYD or MQL. If you want to be in Queensland, take a base in BNE, CNS or ADL.

The always charming recruitment woman will lie to you about how base transfers work. At the end of the day, you need to make very sure that you end up on the EBA that you want to be on, otherwise they will screw you

Adelaide is Eastern, whenever booking flights to any of the Adelaide destinations, the website says operated by Eastern.

Mikewil,
It says that on your ticket because the q300 is on the eastern AOC. It's a sunstate base.
