“Luckily command will be only ten years away, then you can afford to live there.”

Well no, because meagre pay increases (or freezes) while prices increase will erode your buying power. The compounding effect of failure to have increases matching inflation NOW means that you will be falling behind forever.

Admittedly I was being a little facetious with the 10 to upgrade comment, as I believe it is significantly longer than 10 years. But your comment is spot on and just one of a multitude of problems with the Australian career path. Case in point, when was the last time a Qlink dash skipper had a real CoL pay increase? In comparison, below is the pay for an equivalent job stateside.

To be fair for those not playing along at home though, the US regionals are imploding due to their captains being poached by legacy carriers. These pay rates are designed to slow a regional's collapse while mainline spin up training and take delivery of new aircraft to pick up the lift. And the flow programs give you a "guaranteed" mainline job in return for your time there. To give you an idea, United has hired 2300 pilots this year alone. American and Delta are not far behind those numbers either.

Wasn’t Air Wisconsin one of the very first with the E3’s?

I don't think they were first? Could be wrong, but there was a long period of time where they suspended E3's. Their pay isn't that competitive, they wouldn't be the first option if you were looking for an E3 gig.

Friends working for Red Wing Aviation in the US say heaps are leaving due to numerous issues with the organisation. Company throws a large bond onto people also when they get there, was no mention in interview. Yet people are still bailing. Go figure!

Go to Atlas I told them.

Does RWA offer the ability for an Aussie to work there and commute from Australia? If not, can’t imagine why Aussies would choose RWA over Atlas etc.

You'd 'choose' Redwing for a number of reasons, lifestyle etc. What they're offering is exceptional if it's roster that you're after. I'm not aware of the issues, if there are issues that changes things. You'd choose Redwing over Atlas because Atlas didn't take you You simply won't get the opportunity that Redwing is offering in Australia. You can do what ever you want reference commuting, if you're asking if they'll pay fares to and from Australia, no, but neither will any other airline in the States.

I mean a commute isn’t realistic on a 15/13 pattern unless you can combine the 13 off back to back on some months during the year. Does RWA allow or roster pilots so this is achievable?

Asked a couple of them about some of the comments. They said the majority there aren't lasting more than 2 yrs. Threat of a bond recovery is not even keeping people there, most just want out, even local Americans. Many local FOs turning down commands, because don't want another bond and just want to leave the place. It seems they try to use bonds to plug their holes instead of fixing their operational issues. Am told most leaving due to numerous maint, ops, safety concerns and the numerous sectors with 10 hrs off from sign off to sign on, which actually ends up being alot less in reality.

Capt UP,

Did the E3 Aussies you talked with indicate where they're going after leaving RWA ?

Alot of places advertising including sign on bonuses for regionals, they were looking at these and cargo operators like atlas, omni, amerijet etc doing E3s, plus numerous others. Some even thought about going home after this experience.

It's a little sad that a bad corporate experience sent them home when the 121 opportunities here are objectively amazing compared to anything in Australia.

So for anyone watching the thread and considering corporate, maybe avoid the aforementioned outfit?

Alternately:

Go 121, regionals, collect the insane bonuses, get your legacy travel bennies, upgrade as soon as you can. Or go ULCC right into a narrowbody type.

If you're crazy keen on corporate, no one cares when you quit whatever other job you had. At least get the lay of the land at a place that isn't trying to F you (as much)

Capt UP,

Interesting. I didn't know Omni and Amerijet were taking E3s.

And did your contacts from RWA say what made them decide returning to Australia was the thing to do ?

Ravn still looking for DHC-8 E3s. Still need 1000 hours Part 121 for a captain spot but they note that if you arrive without it, upgrade is available after getting 1000 hours:
