something out of left field ...
EK was talking about a 1000 seat all Y class A380 a while ago.
Wouldn't something similar suit JQ down to the ground for use on busy routes?
What range would an A380 have with 1000 pax ?

SYD/LAX or SFO or YVR or cheaper airports like ONT maybe via AKL.
Lot of cheap kiwis out there. At present NZ has AKL/LAX, AKL/SFO & AKL/YVR all to themselves.
They might have to restrict baggage to 15kgs each & charge heaps for over that.

EK must have done the numbers. Presume they would use a 1000 seat aircraft on routes where 1000's of foreign workers fly on cheapest fares possible, from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. not quite the same as kiwis, but similar.

thing of the economies of scale with 1000 seats ?
Most Chinese are small in stature. There are billions of them, hundreds of millions in the emerging middle class & we need their money really REALLY badly to pay off massive govts debt.
Only catch is where would they stay in OZ?
Probably not enough beds.

Clapped out 15 year old 777's are the last thing QF needs.
The cabin refurb alone to bring the product up the required standard would be excessive and make the acquisition not cost effective.
The 380's might be better value depending on the price and who is the actual owner at the moment, but even then again the internal reconfiguration would be hugely expensive.

The current A380-800 is approved for a maximum 538 pax on the main deck and 315 maximum on the upper deck making a grand total of 853 pax.
With a pax mix of males, females, children, infants, baggage and catering a 853 pax load may be a problem due to the ZFW limitation.
A 853 pax load may be available with a stripped down aircraft and little in the way of pax amenities.
Perhaps Keg could advise what average payload is available on the QF fleet as a rough guide.
An A380-900 or A380-1000 are just for virtual airline dreamers !.

Qantas will not be getting any more A380's (no matter how cheap they are). The future is point to point flying using fuel efficient twins like B787-9, B787-10, B777-8X, B777-9X and, to keep the Airbus enthusiasts happy, I'll throw in the A350-900 & A350-1000, but I don't think there's any chance that they would be selected.
Nunc est bibendum

At MZFW you can stick another 205T of fuel on.
Only a rumour. QF want the EBA in front of Fair Work by July done and dusted. Don't know where they would come from but the first 787s would arrive in the first quarter of next year if that was done.
