Virgin takes full control of Tigerair
Galdian yes you are right some LCC's are putting business in long haul.
Personally, when I've had to pay for it, I've sharpened the pencil and worked out for a few dollars more I don't have to be surrounded by hoards of LCC passengers. Cabins getting tighter, stress getting higher and I think there will be a market for QF and VA as not everyone is trying to save small feed on airfares. You know, I just couldn't be bothered getting my card out to pay for food whilst on board just give me something and let me watch the rest of the movie is my mantra.
Being in the industry for a few years I also know that there is no such thing as 'cheap'. There are no short cuts, you get what you pay for. I'm not up for a 18 year old FO cadet taking my family into the Gold Coast on a dark and stormy night thanks very much! (I'll take QF with all the training and equipment on any day). Having said that there are PLENTY that are willing to do the LCC option as we're hardly a country renowned for choosing to pay more for service or quality are we.
As for NZ and the Tasman? How about ANZ just decide they'll do it and we do Australia. Hmmmm.
Either way, it would be good to see some profit in our industry for the airlines. Seems everybody else is having a great time bar us!

My observation was that the JQ total experience...the process, the terminal amenities, the plane and crew weren't bad. They experience did remind me of flying on an average US carrier...better than American, say, but not as good as Delta. Point being it was a good, serviceable product with a reasonable reputation in the marketplace. That is, better than it was five years ago, and better than the folk lore inside QF would have you believe. I paid $115 for an exit seat with luggage on a 1:10 sector, the lowest price avaiable that day, and about what it was worth to me.
And to that clown BNEA320... I'll put my BS ratio against yours any day, son.

So now we're back to 2 major airlines in Australia, the Qantas Group Vs Virgin Group although the structure is vastly different from the the TAA vs Ansett of yesteryear each with their low cost, and regional turbo-prop off shoots.

Flew KUL to OOL Air Asia couple of months ago in business class. I describe it a business class seat without the service. Good seat (I would envisage like first gen skybed), nice quilt and pillow, very comfy for the overnight service. We did get a meal included and it was pretty good would describe it as a premium economy product. It was on special for 340AUD

We are so sick of hearing that TT is awful & QF is wonderful.
Had to fly QF the other day, as client has a QF a/c. Our meal was a cookie.
As not working, asked for a rum & coke which was prepared to pay for & told only beer & wine on domestics except PER now.
Even in QF Club no bundy !!!. What's the world coming to.

I have had a Bundy in every Qantas club I have been to, sometimes you have to ask though or they might slip in a Coruba.
Bundy available in all classes on the aircraft, in the old days they didn't have it in First, but if asked the crew would get a bottle up from further back.
Anyway, thread drift, I know nothing of Tiger (apart from a few mates flying there).
