I hope this is not the case.

Qantas cancels A380 flights due to weak demand

Especially the bit -

Passengers on the cancelled flights will be put on Qantas' other A380 service or an Emirates flight.

Wow.

EK has 5 A380s a day DXB to LHR and three more 777 services to Gatwick, all with load factors in the high 90s.

And QF can't fill 2?

Looks like the EK alliance was another brilliant decision by Alan!

BNEA320 I am led to believe Christmas Eve and Christmas Day would be rather quiet for air travel. Most people would book their flights for before Christmas so they can enjoy the day as opposed to traveling

Qantas has cancelled five return A380 superjumbo flights over the next two months between its new overseas hub in Dubai and London because of weak seasonal demand.
So out of 120 flights, they have cancelled five. Who wants to go to Europe in winter?

I think this is the point made regardless of other factors (winter in Europe, Christmas cancellations etc) Maybe QF will be squeezed off the route in time to come.

If QF hadn't jumped into bed with EK would they still have a good market on European routes via SIN or BKK?

The QF 9/10 should go via Singapore, most people want to go via Asia and it would help connecting traffic via the few other Australian Capitals to Singapore, Alan just doesn't want to lose face just like every other fing disaster decision he has made....

A couple of thoughts.

For family reasons, we are regular visitors to DXB. Since 2008, we have used QF, EK and BA[ex-LHR] to get there.

Why would folks NOT fly QF? Try this for size.......
Looking at 6 week trip to Europe/UK with stopovers in DXB [3 days on the way up and 10 days back.] Internet check EK for the itinerary in J-class - $16,000. Thinks to oneself "Didn't mind the look of Premium Economy [W-class] on the QF A380 last time we flew, why not book that?" Internet booking gives a fare of $15,999. However, like the Demtel man, there's more. The QF itinerary at this price SYD-DXB-FRA is codeshare Y-class on EK; one doesn't get W-class until leaving LHR on QF!!

So, as we've done before, phone to EK "Do you still have the combi fare to DXB/Europe [this is J-class Oz-DXB-Oz and Y-class DXB/Europe/UK-DXB]?" Answer "Yes....for that itinerary $11,623." "Excellent, here's the credit card number!"

Couple of things here. First, the QF deal is simply a blatant rip-off! Secondly, it would seem that the EK agreement which Alan signed has no stop-over rights in UAE [or, worse, QF don't sell fares based on these rights if they exist.] It's not just my experience. My dentist [plenty of time to chat waiting for the anesthetic to take] had the same deal trying a simple Y-class fare to Europe; QF straight up and back ~$1700, QF with stopover in DXB on the way home ~$10,000, EK for the stopover itinerary, $1800. Guess what!!??

Others may care to confirm the additional flights which CX, BA and SQ have run to pick up the flow of we Aussies voting with our feet to fly to Europe through Asia.

Idiots!!

Absolutely agree.
No advantage in stop at Dubai. Singapore is just as flexible for connecting to Europe, and a much more desirable stop or transit.

...DXB is just a monied version of one. Why, oh why would you voluntarily aim to spend transit time there? At the least any of the Asian capitals afford the average traveller a double dip at another box tick on their once or twice lifetime journey.

I cannot imagine that Dubai will ever be anything more than a crossroads experience, albeit with good duty free. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot lead a horticulture.

Correct.
You can only use onwards Qantas-ticketed EK-operated connections if you are in transit through Dubai.

Additionally, on a few occasions recently we've heard from Qantas Premium passengers who, whilst waiting in the EK Premium lounges in Dubai, have been offered significant inducements to book their future flights entirely with EK rather than with Qantas. Good to know who you're partners are......

C441 I call horse sh@t on your Ek poaching pax from the lounge. The folks that work there just don't have the time, nor the grade to do so. Maybe these QF pax just like the lounges?

Ek are running close to 4400 seats per day each way DXB OZ DXB. The load factors are high, so it would seem that the non Asian connection doesn't worry a lot of PAX.

Fares

I was looking to book a trip from NZ to Europe early next year. There were all manner of very cheap deals ex-Australia that were all far cheaper then QF and EK. For example there were flights to London on Royal Brunei for $1500 return on their new 787's; slightly dearer for Etihad/Virgin Australia.

And for the record, EK seats are shocking - very cramped.

Let's summarise the above posts.
1 QF have cancelled a few flights... Been done before, will be done again.
2 Allan shot himself in the foot with his deal re EK. This has been discussed ad nauseum
since the deal was made. Old news.
3 as the British say, the Arabs are in the Middle East; singapore and Thailand etc are in the Far East. What they both have in common is that they are all Asians. Yes, Arabs are Asians, just a lot further away from Oz.

I only found this out a few years ago myself. I didn't even realise that the Pakkies and Indians were Asian.
Just out of interest, where do the Maoris fit in?

That is why India/Pakistan/Bangladesh are called the sub-continent. They are at the bottom of the Asian continent. Go to England and when they talk about Asians, they are generally referring to Indians etc which is very different from the expressions common meaning in Australia. Both are technically right.

where do the Maoris fit in?
Maoris are Polynesian. They come from Oceania which is a region not a continent but covers all of the south-west Pacific including NZ.

Quite possibly. I can only reiterate that I have been told this directly by First and Business class passengers after departure from DXB as have colleagues who've spoken to passengers in the premium cabins. One of these passengers I spoke to was quite annoyed that an Emirates staff member was approaching all of the passengers in the lounge offering physical and other inducements to travel with the Dubai carrier in future.

Obviously, I have not seen or heard these offers being made as I'm not entitled to go to the lounges as a passenger nor have had the need to when operating.

These lounges are huge and accommodate large numbers at all times. For someone to track down QF pax in them would be very close on impossible.


We met a friend travelling QF yesterday. She told us that she and her partner had to stay in different hotels during their layover here as they were not married. I explained that DXB has a huge holiday market, and what she was saying simply wasn't true. But she insisted. On questioning further, we found she was traveling J class, and he in y. Guess where the airline put there J class pax to stay, and where they put there y class pax to stay?


So it would seem some pax rather live a fantasy world of make believe, as it makes them more important and gives them far more exciting stories to tell.

I travel to Germany regularly with my wife on EK with a QF ticket (Economy). Have done so for past 16 years and used most of the airlines.

Have been with EK last couple of trips. Each time we board, senior cabin crew member seeks us out and offers special service (priority meal, fast transit etc).I have QF Gold status. Use EK lounges also which are far better than some of the QF cafeteria? styles (perth on a typical day). Have ordered drink on QF and it has been forgotten at times.

It is the EK type of service that wins the customer, so who can be critical of them approaching customers. Must admit the only downside is the flight time (0600 Dep) and miss the SIN changeover.
