Qantas pulling out of Singapore ??

The QF flight timings are not ideal for Singapore-based pax. Eg SIN-PER arrives close to midnight. PER-SIN leaves at 0800 from Northern Summer.

This means a Singaporean family of 4 going to PER would need to spend 2 extra nights of accomodation on a holiday. And if you've young kids you won't want to check into your hotel at 1am and then check out at 5am to get to the airport for the 8am flight.

SQ already has 28 flights, Scoot is 5 weekly and Tiger is 12 weekly.

QF is daily 3K is 12 weekly. In theory 3K is operating into PER as a Singaporean carrier, but practically it makes no difference due to open skies between SIN and AU.

So full service, proper airlines out of PER to SIN. QF, seven times per week, SQ 28 times per week. No wonder mainline is in so much trouble. Some. People have a lot to answer for.

Whenever I fly SQ into SIN from Australia, there are so many QF Gold and Plat pax on the flight, just by observing hand luggage and checked luggage tags.

If QF only offers 1 flight a day from MEL and SQ offers 4, which would you choose? Further, if you ran a business ex MEL, would you want your staff to waste the entire day getting from MEL to SIN on QF, or would you like him to have the choice to leave on the 1900 arriving SIN at midnight, allowing for a full day of work the next day and the day of flight - or if in J, you could even put your staff on the overnight from MEL departing at midnight arriving at 5.30am?

If you run a business ex SIN, would you like your staff to waste an extra night of accomodation in MEL just to take the 10am flight back, or would you put them on SQ so that they can come back at 7pm or on the overnight? Of course ex MEL there is also EK which leaves at 7pm - but that's not a QF operated flight is it, and even if booked on the codeshare I wonder how much benefit QF gets out of it

I think the criticism is a bit harsh, SIN is a hub for onward connections, not a final destination for most travelers. It's a bit hard to match frequency with an airline that can carry pax from AUS to the world with a consistent product compared with an end of line carrier that flies to the hub and has poor connections with substandard LCC's or other 'alliance' partners to connect with.

It's a losing proposition for Qantas. Only government intervention regarding the seemingly unlimited capacity dumping would change that and it's not something likely to occur in the next 3 years of Abbot and co.

The only other thing that would help Qantas is hub busting aircraft that could do SYD-LHR direct at an economically feasible rate.

600ft-lb sums up the Singapore conundrum very succinctly. It is easy to forget that SQ operate a hub to points north, east and west with its own metal. Qantas could never compete with that! Capacity dumping is another story and won't Aust Govt policy won't change whilever 'the adults are in charge'.

But isn't it just like SQ saying they should withdraw from the Americas and not do NRTLAX, HKGSFO, ICNSFO, FRAJFK, DMEIAH and BCNGRU? Airlines North Asia, the Middle East and Europe can all fly non stop from their hubs to the Americas and SQ can't. Further, with 13 A330s worth of passengers arriving in Singapore from Australia each day (that excludes transfer traffic and non Singaporeans and Australians) and vv, that's not insignificant traffic.

DEFCON4,

AirNZ have only just returned to Singapore after an 8 year absence. They fly 7 times per week.

SIA flies daily to/from AKL and CHC.

The NZ Gov't owns 54%. Maybe that's what you are trying to get at.

NZ is an end of the line carrier much like QF is. However, they seem to be successful because:

1. They have a 80% share of their domestic market
2. They only fly international routes where they have a monopoly; or
3. If they don't have a monopoly on the international route the fly in, they operate joint ventures with a dominant player on the route. That is, CX to HKG, NH to NRT, VA to Australia and soon SQ to SIN. They made it clear they won't fly to SIN if the alliance with SQ was not approved

Maybe naive but i think a good manager could turn it around fast. First obviously restore routes to UK and codeshare on to Euroope via Asia as a top priority. I like most others i know wont fly via Dubai. Then market it as the safe and reliable option flown by Australians, not necessarily the very cheapest. Once there is demand, everything else takes care of itself.

Anyway congrats to all those working hard at Qantas like the people last night. Hope the right management comes soon.
extralite, thanks for your kind comments. I was the safety F/O on your flight. One of the two Captains was doing refresher training as a result of some time off work due medical. Those two guys (both Senior Check Captains) are amongst Qantas' finest pilots, really focused on doing 100% for their passengers and great blokes to fly with (and to have checking you in the simulator, but that's another story!).

And yes, the load was very healthy. Being a relatively short night sector, it is always tough for the cabin crew to get everyone fed, watered AND allow some time for passengers to sleep. But my observations were that the cabin crew made an outstanding team and did a sterling job.

Crews like that and support like yours will help Qantas get through this latest storm.

Seems it is not only Qantas, and not only Singapore, that is having problems with Emirates, this from todays South China Morning Post.............


The move by Emirates Airlines to add a new service to Taipei would divert Taiwan transit passengers from Hong Kong to Dubai, dealing another blow to Cathay Pacific Airways' long established and lucrative network business in the region, analysts said.

Emirates will challenge Cathay's dominant role on the Taiwan-Europe route because the deep-pocketed carrier can leverage its better European network and competitive airfares.

Some 65 per cent of the transit passengers from Taiwan opt to fly with Cathay now because Taiwan has limited choices in international air services, said Edwin Lau Wing-chu, vice-president of Hong Kong and Taiwan at Emirates Airlines. Taiwan has direct flights to just four European cities; Paris, Frankfurt, Vienna and Amsterdam.

"Taiwan is not a big market but [is one] with good potential as its long-haul market is underserved," Lau added.

With an eye on luring Taiwanese travellers to fly via Dubai to Europe, the Middle East or other destinations in North and South America, Emirates kicked off six weekly flights to Taipei starting last week, deploying Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Lau said when the extension of the south runway at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport is completed next year to meet the requirements for Airbus 380 landings, Emirates will consider switching to the bigger plane. Lau also said it is likely that the service will be extended to twice daily in the near term.

"Any airline wanting to compete with the Middle East carriers is destined to be on the losing end given that airlines is a network business and the international network of Emirates is expanding in accordance with its aggressive acquisition of planes," said Eric Lin, a transport analyst at UBS.

"In the long run, Hong Kong's hub status is at risk" because transit passengers to North America will eventually shift to mainland carriers when they expand their international services, Lin said.

Cathay has already seen the threat to its European routes from Middle East-based carriers, so has shifted its focus to North America, where it upgraded its New York service to four times daily, said another analyst, who declined to be named.

Cathay and its subsidiary Dragonair flew five million passengers between Hong Kong and Taiwan last year, ranking No3 after Taiwanese airlines China Airlines and Eva Airways.

Cathay said 4 per cent of the five million passengers flew beyond Hong Kong to Europe.

In terms of international traffic serving Taiwan, the Cathay grouping has a share of 16 per cent, according to data from the Civil Aeronautics Administration of Taiwan.

Is that just China Airlines or does it include Eva too?

Can and have, SIN-EWR, just not sufficient revenue so they stopped.


Some years ago SQ offered QF a link up, not just code share, money included, QF refused, like the failure to order the B777, possibly a fatal decision.

flew SCOOT to Sin

not long before qf to Jakarta . not much noticeable difference except cost + now scoot getting 787s !!!!

QANTAS & Singapore/Bangkok

Here's a suggestion:
Fly QFA to Singapore and then get the EK connection to DXB, same for BKK. Probably could still get on QFA in DXB if timing is right.

saintmikeII - I think the priorities for passengers flying to Europe from Australia who have already gone via QF and Dubai are to:


1. Avoid Dubai and 2. Avoid QF until their menu and service picks up again.
