At a recent love in, the new COO was asked directly why QF needed to have a specific return on capital before investment on new airframes, yet JQ Intl didn't turn a dollar and had the newest aircraft in the fleet. His answer was that he acknowledged the truth in that, but simply wasn't able to answer that question as he didn't know the reason.
"Until it returns its cost of capital" is meaningless gibberish that can never be tested in a court of law. Management simply needed a plausible cover story in order to justify the process.
... because Jetstar (Intl) is going to fly all the Qantas tail 787 900s that will come. Duh!

Having worked on OJA over many years, I have to say it was in great condition compared to some of the other 400s in the fleet and always seemed to have less problems to rectify than some of the newer 400s, perhaps because most common problems had already been sorted.

OJA Definitely going to Albion Park
Heard it personally from Alan Joyce this evening at the 767 farewell function.
Not saying there may not be some possibility of an unseen hurdle cropping up to stop it happening but the intention is 100% to park it at HARS.

As a non-pilot, is it possible to safely land a presumably almost empty 747 at Albion Park, and once in, is there any way to fly it out?
It seemed hairy enough to me making a few trips in the Qantas Dash 8 before that service was cancelled.

The problem with Albion Park is corrosion. IRA is not Longreach where the air is dry. At IRA, if you scrape a hole in the ground it fills with saltwater and the runway is only a short distance from Lake Illawarra which opens to the sea.
So if OGA is seen as a significant heritage item, its not the place to go to preserve it. If its to be just a tourist draw card then its the way to go.

The "wankers" don't get it and sadly they never will. Hopefully OJA is to be preserved because true believers with beating hearts want to see part of the company's heritage preserved, not because some psychopath thinks; "This'll make me look good".

Went to the "campus" recently and up to information desk and asked what floor flight ops is on these days. Quizzical looks from the desk person .... "Not sure I've heard of them , what do they do ?"

Albion Park would be a fitting home for OJA, great exposure for the Qantas brand and good for the Local business community, a wonderful "gift to Wollongong" from our National carrier. A win win for all of us.
